galbeedi Posted February 4, 2022 This news is just in from Abu Dubai. It isn't confirmed yet by Somaliland, Ethiopia or others. A source in the gulf nation said the Emirates are very reluctant to abandon Berbera yet, but their activities in Berbera indicate otherwise. Even locals in Berbera see the attitude of the port managers lately as vultures. They are charging a fee for every car that enters the port and port service levies had doubled. Some might even see this sas a means to recoup their investment as quickly as possible. The Emirates had invested some money in Berbera and increased the tonnage of the cargo, but also had collected millions of dollars for their service and had exported millions of tons of precious stones collected from Somaliland in their ships without paying any taxes or royalties. Also, despite their supposed investment, the activity of Berbera port had decreased year over year. Just as Boosaaso is almost drying up due to disagreements with DP World which manages the port from a distant in Dubai, Bebera could face the same fate soon. We might argue about UAE and their intentions, and some might say, they will not leave a strategic port like Berbera, but the Ethiopian position is very clear. Last week the finance minister, the soft spoken Ina Ali Shire, has quietly dropped a bomb shell saying " Ethiopia no longer owns any shares in Berbera. In fact, the real word was , " Ethiopia no longer wants any shares from Berbera port" In order to reach the elusive recognition, Somaliland had thrown itself to the most contentious issue that involves the second biggest economy in the world--China. THe Chinese had raffled feathers every country that tries to recognize or give any institutional acknowledgement to the island of Taiwan. From Lithuania to Honduras, China has raised its economic power to punish those who challenge the "One China Policy". Yet, the Hargeisa Maamul, which is out of touch of the real world, thought by recognizing Taiwan, it may get some badly needed attention from others. Well, the Asian dragon have noticed the attention seeking girl and might even crush her.Actually, they don't have to do much to punish. THe Chinese had appointed an envoy for the horn of Africa , and the first order of the business was to punish this ignorant transgressor who dared China. In the early seventies, the late American president Richard Nixon , wanted to put wedges between the the two communist giants, the Soviet Union and Mao led communist China. In order to bring China closer to the west, he had to change a long held American policy. America dropped the Republic of China (Taiwan) from the UN and offered not only recognition of the representative of the real China, the people's republic of China, but also accepted China to join the veto welding five permanent powers of the security council. Since then everyone flowed the one China policy. Unbeknown to the Hargeisa crowd, Somalia was one of the first African nations who recognized the people's republic while many countries including Ethiopia and others recognized Taiwan as the real Chinese government. That was the reason the Somali embassy in Beijing is at stones throw from Tiananmen square. Well, who needs history these days. The Hargeisa entity is the only place in the continent of Africa that is looking to challenge and confront the Chinese dragon. Soon we might see Chinese flagged ships and other Asian ships who could refuse to dock Berbera. If Ethiopia, which has only less than 5% of its trade through Berbera, flows the Chinese orders, this huge empty port has to feed only the market of less than 2 million people of Somaliland which already has 75% unemployment rate. The Ahmed Siilaanyo family took $5million dollars a year deal, took even the rent of 2018 in advance and settled in a Dubai mansion. Another fool called C/weli Gaas, cashed few millions and sold Boosaaso for peanuts and lectures as from Nairobi. Allah Doori Dembigay Galeenba Garan Maayaan. After 30 years and and less than $300 million dollar budget , Soomsaliland is seeking still attention.
baala xoofto Posted February 4, 2022 Ethiopia couldn't come up with the dollars to purchase the 19%. That is where UK's Investment arm the CDC stepped in. The Ethiopians are all in, thanks in many ways to the UAE which has special relationship with the current leaders in Addis Abeba. The Berbera Corridor will become one of the major trade corridors in Africa. DP World is investing an additional $1 Billion dollars to develop this trade corridor with a string of dry ports in key locations all feeding Berbera Port. Within the next few months there will be a lot of activities in kicking off a lot of projects including the Berbera Free Zone and the second phase of the development of the Port. With regards to Bosaso, that is history. The Pirates mismanaged the millions of dollars that was meant to create space for the port and secure it and now they are broke and cannot do anything. Dubai's DP World, UK's CDC to invest up to $1.7 bln in Africa WWW.REUTERS.COM Dubai ports giant DP World and Britain's development finance agency CDC Group on Tuesday said they planned to jointly invest up to $1.72 billion in logistics infrastructure in Africa over the next several years...
