Al-shabaab Launches Attack On Puntland Base at Af-urur

Bosaso (PP New Desk) — A group of Al-shabaab fighters last night attacked a Puntland forces’ base at Uf-urur village at Golis mountains roughly sixty kilometres southwest of Bosaso city.

Al-shabaab used mortars against the base, a strategy different from its past direct attacks on Puntland bases. A Bari regional authority official said that Puntland troops had repelled the attack.

Al-shabaab launched a surprise attack on the base several years ago killing more than fifty soldiers. The treacherous terrain of Golis mountains provides Al-shabaab with opportunities to seek hideouts from which they attack Puntland forces at Af-urur and Galgala.

Many prisoners who were released by Al-shabaab in a jailbreak seven months ago had joined the militias of the proscribed group based at hideouts at Golis mountains.
