Now Toronto Police are hoping to pay another price to find their killers. Cops have put up a $50,000 reward for information about the murders of Loyan Mohammed Ahmed and Ali Mohamud Ali. It was exactly a year ago Friday that both men left the Phoenix Nightclub on Sherbourne St. They walked to their parked car at Maitland and Homewood around 3am and lingered for a while, talking to some friends. For reasons that still aren't clear, a man appeared from the darkness, pulled a gun, and began firing at them. Both men were killed, while one of their companions wound up in hospital with gunshot wounds. Three hundred and sixty-five days later, cops are no closer to knowing who gunned down the pair or why and they're hoping a bounty will loosen some long shut lips to help ease the families' endless nightmare. "Oh, it's been dreadful," concedes Amran Ali, the victim's sister. "It's just a day-by-day struggle. Every day we're just trying to live, but it's just hard." But neighbours who knew the victims aren't quite so subtle. "They should find the killer," demands a resident named Norma. "You know, it's about time the police force start working more harder to find all these killers." Cops understand their anger. "They're extremely frustrated, as you can imagine," notes Det. Bill Vieiria. "They obviously want some closure. They've lost, you know, two beloved sons, and unfortunately they haven't been able to get the closure that they need in regards to this case." The killings have been especially difficult to accept because they were so senseless. "They were standing there. They were simply engaged in a conversation with their friends when the suspect came along and shot at them," Vieiria details. The families welcome the bounty, and are hopeful it helps flush out the gunman. "It came a little late but otherwise -we're very thankful, we're very grateful for the $50,000 reward," Amran confesses. The description of the wanted man is the same now as it was then: Black, 20s, 5'10"-6', 150-160 lbs., Black braids, Goatee. He was wearing blue jeans, a black T-shirt and a blue do-rag, with those braids coming out from the sides of the head covering. The reward offer is good for a year, but police are hoping it doesn't take that long to get the vital clue they need.
