Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — President of Puntland State of Somalia Said Abdullahi Deni has called on Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble to compromise to end the political deadlock.

“In May 2021 the Federal Member States signed an agreement on the electoral model. The blame for failing to implement the agreement lies with leaders who have fallen short” said Deni without specifying who should take the blame for disagreements between President Mohamed and Prime Minister Roble.

“It is the responsibility of the Prime Minister to oversee the security of elections in line with 27 May 2021 agreement” added Deni, who brushed aside constitutional controversy arising from Roble’s firing of the intelligence agency director in violation of presidential privilege codified in the draft constitution.

A revised electoral agreement tasks Federal Member States with overseeing the selection of MPs in addition to Senators whom parliamentarians of Federal Member States have selected. An extraordinary summit organised by Puntland following the limiting of Roble’s executive powers by President Mohamed has been cancelled.

“If Federal Member States in conjunction with the Federal Electoral Implementation Team finalise the selection of MPs, the political deadlock will be broken. Neither President Mohamed nor Prime Minister Roble can interfere with the electoral process” said Hussein Ali, a political analyst in Mogadishu.
