I took my trick question from trollers

Since those trollers didn't get the trick...I have decided to dedicate a whole thread to The Trick....here it is again!

 

A hammer and a nail cost $1.10 in total. The hammer costs $1.00 more than the nail. How much does the nail cost?

A. $1.10

B. $0.10

C. $0.05

D. $1.00

E. $0.15

I was gonna say 10 cents...but since it's a trick question...i'll still say 10 cents

^it wouldn't make sense for it to be B the question clearly states $1 more than the nail so your allready starting from a certain point and that point isn't 0 so it can only be C for it to make sense

#2 N+1=H

 

N+1+N=1.10

2N=1.10-1

2N=0.1

N=.05

 

QED.

 

But for the record, I was at the hardware store just yesterday and: 1) nails are not sold singly, so you must have bought two, AND 2) hammers cost more than a dollar

Aaliyah, the "trick" is, if the nail costs 0.05, how can the total price for 1 hammer and 1 nail equal 1.10?

Nail is worth $0.05

 

Hammer is worth $1.00 more than the nail..

 

$1.05 + $0.05 = $1.10

 

Cara, no equation is required...no trick...just a brain...

 

Femmme, if the nail was worth $0.10 than the hammer would be worth $1.10 which would be $1.00 more than the nail for a total of $1.20...and that does not fit the question because the total should be $1.10

^Cara you only have $1.10 therefore if the Hammer is 1$ more than the nail options A-B-D-E are by default disqualified. The hammer costs $1.05 hence the difference in worth is $1

already your answer was right...merely I was telling you that you need not complicate the issue by using an equation.

no one said you are adding 0.05 and 1.00 dollar...

 

the key of this math problem is "the hammer is one dollar more"

 

so if the nail is $0.05 and the hammer is $1.05 then the hammer is one dollar more than the nail

 

 

If the cost of the hammer is one dollar as you put it and the nail is 5 cents then the difference would be $ 0.95..remember the difference has to be a dollar....
