Legend of Zu Posted March 7, 2008 Since those trollers didn't get the trick...I have decided to dedicate a whole thread to The Trick....here it is again! A hammer and a nail cost $1.10 in total. The hammer costs $1.00 more than the nail. How much does the nail cost? A. $1.10 B. $0.10 C. $0.05 D. $1.00 E. $0.15 Do Not Use a Calculator! Aaliyyah Posted March 7, 2008 C.0.05.....obviously!!!
- Femme - Posted March 7, 2008 ^How? I was gonna say 10 cents...but since it's a trick question...i'll still say 10 cents
Chimera Posted March 7, 2008 ^it wouldn't make sense for it to be B the question clearly states $1 more than the nail so your allready starting from a certain point and that point isn't 0 so it can only be C for it to make sense
Cara. Posted March 7, 2008 #1 H+N=1.10 #2 N+1=H N+1+N=1.10 2N=1.10-1 2N=0.1 N=.05 QED. But for the record, I was at the hardware store just yesterday and: 1) nails are not sold singly, so you must have bought two, AND 2) hammers cost more than a dollar Bleeding academics and their silly mathematics based on the selling power of the dollar in 1850
Aaliyyah Posted March 7, 2008 It is not a trick question. It is rather straight forward lol cara did you have to construct an equation for it....
Buuxo Posted March 7, 2008 Does the nail cost .5cents?
Cara. Posted March 7, 2008 Aaliyah, the "trick" is, if the nail costs 0.05, how can the total price for 1 hammer and 1 nail equal 1.10? LOZ is up to his usual shenanigans  And yeah, I always construct an equation for word problems, doesn't everyone?
Aaliyyah Posted March 7, 2008 ^^ do you have doubts Buuxo Hammer is worth $1.05 Nail is worth $0.05 Hammer is worth $1.00 more than the nail.. $1.05 + $0.05 = $1.10 Cara, no equation is required...no trick...just a brain... Femmme, if the nail was worth $0.10 than the hammer would be worth $1.10 which would be $1.00 more than the nail for a total of $1.20...and that does not fit the question because the total should be $1.
Buuxo Posted March 7, 2008 ^ lool not anymore...just saw Cara's equation...crystal clear now. I brain feels like an old car...got to do more math on my head.
Cara. Posted March 7, 2008 Aaliyah, you have a magical extra $0.05 there. IF the cost of nail: $0.05 Cost of hammer: $1.00 more than cost of nail Adding $0.05 + $1.00 gives you $1.05, not $1.10. Meh, I could be over-thinking it...
Som@li Posted March 7, 2008 N+H=1.10 H=1.10-N H=N+1 1.10-N =N+1 1.10-1 =N+N 0.10=2N N =0.05 Nail =$0.
Chimera Posted March 7, 2008 ^Cara you only have $1.10 therefore if the Hammer is 1$ more than the nail options A-B-D-E are by default disqualified. The hammer costs $1.05 hence the difference in worth is $
Aaliyyah Posted March 7, 2008 loooool looks like you are off track now ... already your answer was right...merely I was telling you that you need not complicate the issue by using an equation. IF the cost of nail: $0.05 Cost of hammer: $1.00 more than cost of nail Adding $0.05 + $1.00 gives you $1.05, not $1.10. no one said you are adding 0.05 and 1.00 dollar... the key of this math problem is "the hammer is one dollar more" so if the nail is $0.05 and the hammer is $1.05 then the hammer is one dollar more than the nail If the cost of the hammer is one dollar as you put it and the nail is 5 cents then the difference would be $ 0.95..remember the difference has to be a dollar.... I hope this is clear enough
Cara. Posted March 7, 2008 It does Aaliyah. I let my distrust of Zu's trick questions get in the way
