Camel Milk: The Biggest Hump in the Milk Industry

Got milk? Got camel milk? I didn't think so.

 

Although camel milk has a taste that's worth acquiring, it is unlikely that people will be splashing it on their cornflakes. But for those who need it, this is a natural, sustainable way to a healthier life. Speaking as someone who has tasted it both cool and pasteurized and frothy and warm direct from the teat -- after a few glugs it's downright delicious.

 

Right now in the U.S. the only people who can get hold of the milk 'a la mode' are 14 Amish camel dairies and the few parents who have demanded the dromedary juice as a treatment for their autistic child.

 

"Milk is money" according to The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) dairy and meat expert Anthony Bennett. But the cow dairy industry need not fear. After years of being on the market goat's milk is still a relatively novel product so as a commercial venture camel's milk hasn't got a chance. However, it is gaining ground as a health product, inspired by a litany of claims that punch above the pedestrian cow.

 

Camel milk is the closest you can get to a human mother's milk, with 10 times more iron and three times more vitamin C than cow's milk. It is antibacterial and low in lactose. Used medicinally by nomadic communities for centuries, fermented camel's milk is still popular in Kazakhstan as a treatment for Tuberculosis and for HIV/AIDS in Kenya and Somalia. Research has been conducted into treating Crohn's disease, breast cancer and autism, however the most promising studies have been in the field of diabetes.

 

While almost impossible to make camel milk into cheese, this is good news for diabetes sufferers. Dr. Agrawal of the Bikaner Diabetes Care and Research Centre explains, "We have demonstrated that the consumption of camel milk in type I diabetes results in a significant reduction in the dose of insulin required to maintain long-term glycemic control." Whilst the 2005 study maintained that insulin therapy is still the best option, in cases of needle phobia or in countries where the cost of treatment demands an alternative, just 500ml of raw fresh camel's milk daily improves quality of life. This is due to a protein found in camel milk with characteristics similar to insulin that does not coagulate as is the case with cow and goat milk. The camel milk protein passes rapidly through the stomach into the intestines for absorption.

 

So will this magical milk be reaching supermarket shelves any time soon?

 

Despite having the potential to help anemic mothers and feed newborn babies, as well as improve the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS, diabetes and autism, this is an unlikely step for the FDA to take. Speaking to Dr. Millie Hinkle of Camel Milk USA, it is clear that there is still a long way to go. "The camel industry in the U.S. is in a mess quite frankly. I have spent every penny that I have. I have even sold my wedding ring and all the furniture out of my house to help pay for test kits so that milk can be sold in stores. The FDA has refused to pay for the lab results and they say that they are overworked and understaffed. To get the milk ready for the market I will have to pay for everything myself or the camel people will," says Dr. Hinkle

 

It's an oft-heard story; without commercial viability the health benefits alone aren't worth the money or the research.

 

It is a different story in Dubai, where Martin van Almsick, of camel milk chocolate producer Al-Nassma, has high hopes: "In Sudan we are looking at about four million animals, which means camel liver restaurants -- raw with lime and onions, very delicious -- and a new chain of raw camel milk shops."

 

"Camel milk is the new oil," says Director Alicia Sully of The What Took You So Long Foundation (WTYSL), a film crew currently traveling Africa and the Middle East documenting the camel milk industry and campaigning for more research to be undertaken, "Camels don't produce as much milk as cows, so it's relatively rare. Camel populations are in decline so sharing knowledge about how valuable its milk is may help save an animal that has supported humans in the desert for thousands of years."

Hmm, but what the article did not mention is that a she-camel produces less than 10% milk compare to a cow, and desertification they cause.

 

Most camels like in Australia should be destroyed from Somalia, it is causing more harm(Environment, Conflicts, ) than good, It already turned the country into desert.

 

When things become normal home, After local studies, and comparing studies done in other countries, government will be forced to control the population of camels in Somalia. We had similar programs before.

 

 

The increasing numbers of feral camels are a cause for concern as they are the only large browser in Australia.

 

Although camels are considered to be browsers,
they have been observed to feed on most of the available plant species in areas where the diet has been examined, including pasture species. Camels damage trees and shrubs when browsing and can severely defoliate preferred trees,
shrubs, and vines. They also inhibit recruitment of their preferred food species by suppressing flowering and fruit production and by browsing and killing juvenile plants.

 

Camels have the ability to cause the local extinction of highly preferred species like the quandong (Santalum acuminatum), plumbush (S. lanceolatum), curly pod wattle (Acacia sessiliceps), native apricot (Pittosporum augustifolium), bean tree (Erythrina vespertilio), and Lawrencia species. In 2008, both the quandong and native apricot were observed to have declined dramatically in the Petermann Ranges south-west of Alice Springs relative to the 1970s, attributed to a combination of inappropriate fire regime and camel browsing. Severe damage to desert poplar (Codonocarpus cotinifolius) was also noted.

 

In central Australia, serious and widespread negative impacts on vegetation have been recorded where camels occur at densities of more than two animals/km2, though damage to highly palatable species occurs at much lower densities. In more arid country near Lake Eyre, significant negative impacts on vegetation have been recorded where camels occur at densities of more than one animals/km2. Camels already occur at localised densities more than two animals/km2 over much of their current range.

 

The impact of feral camels on native plants and drinkable water is most pronounced during drought, when areas close to remote waterholes become refuges that are critical to the survival of a range of native animals and plants. Feral camels can quickly degrade these areas during a drought to the point where they may no longer provide any refuge for native plants and animals, perhaps leading to the local extinction of these species. The Action Plan for Australian Marsupials and Monotremes recommends that feral camel numbers be reduced at specific areas to help protect the habitat of threatened animals such as the ampurta (Dasycercus hillieri).

 

 

Feral camels may damage pastoral enterprises through competition with stock for limited forage, and by damage to the property infrastructure — fences, windmills, water troughs, etc. Camels are susceptible to tuberculosis and brucellosis, which are serious diseases of livestock, as well as some other serious stock and human diseases that do not yet occur in Australia. Feral camels may act as a reservoir of infection for any of these diseases.

 

Feral camels have also become a public safety issue — with road, rail and even some air traffic at risk from collisions with wandering camels.
