grasshopper Posted January 8, 2008 Has anyone here ever considered going overseas to teach English? Better yet, has anyone here ever worked abroad as an English teacher =) I spent some time in Taiwan last year and it was the best decision I've made! All you need is a degree and an open mind. What do you guys think of Somalis going abroad to teach English?
Laba-X Posted January 8, 2008 I would love to do that and insha-Allah when time permits me I will make a move - somewhere in Asia or Africa. I would love to open a school in Somalia but it is hard to find the resources and like-minded enthusiasts. How do you go about it grasshopper?
Jacaylbaro Posted January 8, 2008 What do you mean about abroad ? You're talking to SOL members and it seems they're almost everywhere ..... As for me, i would like to go abroad to LEARN English .....

Nehanda Posted January 8, 2008 I thought about it and it is definitely something I intend to do sometime in the future insha allah. Would love to teach disadavantaged children in Somalia. Probably from extreme poverty, find funding and open a free of charge primary school.
NGONGE Posted January 8, 2008 ^^ Do it now if you can. In the future you will be old and cynical.

Honestly (from what I've seen) it's so easy to go to Asia once you've set your mind to it. The demand is soooo high and there are a lot of companies out there (mostly run by former teachers who know the business) who will do the work for you and find you a school. Better yet, a lot of schools these days recruit themselves by coming to job fairs in your city or posting job notices online. I'm not a trained teacher but I would love to go to Africa and teach English! Somalia, Sudan and Egypt would be my top choices =) For obvious reason though I would love to go back to Somalia and teach! Originally posted by J.a.c.a.y.l.b.a.r.o: What do you mean about abroad ? I was in somalia for two months right after graduating and I couldn't believe how eager the kids were to learn English! They kept coming up and asking me to translate different somali words into english and then they'd memorize it and come back for another word =)
Blessed Posted January 8, 2008 ^Great stuff. If you have CELTA qualification, you can get a job almost anywhere, though you can get away with a degree in poorer nations. One of my nephews, who grew up in the UAE went and set up an English school back home. Useful sites: www.teachanywhere.com www.esflcafe.com
ElPunto Posted January 8, 2008 Grasshopper welcome to SOL. That is a cool experience though personally I would never go the Far East. My sister tried to get a posting in the Middle East somewhere and there was virtually none to be had. They kept urging her to go to China. A lone black hijaabi - she passed! Gediid Posted January 8, 2008 This is one such place where you could potentially become a teacher not only in English but if qualified for other subjects.....Proud to call this one of the best schools one could teach at...Sandford International School
