NGONGE Posted September 22, 2010 In the last few days, the Swedish elections resulted in a Far Right Party gaining seats in the parliament and having an opportunity to wield power in the hung elections. Like its sister parties in many parts of Europe, the Swedish Democrats cite immigration as a main focus in their policies. In addition, and in line with many nationalist parties around the world, they blame immigrants for refusing to be assimilated, creating ethnic pockets in main cities and stealing the jobs of indigenous workers. Many people argue that the triumph of the Swedish Democrats and similar parties in many parts of Europe and the world is simply a fad that is gaining popularity due to the draconian anti discrimination laws and the escalating exploitation of political correctness. They also argue that this trend will die a natural death once an acceptable equilibrium is reached. The problems of extreme nationalism are not limited to Europe or the West. It can be found in every country where immigrants are found, from the wealthy Gulf Arabs complaining about the over reliance on Asian workers to the African countries moaning about the encroachment of China into their lands, even in Japan they complain about “the bloody Koreans”! There is only one place in the world where such conflict has not arisen. It is a place that chooses to move at its own steady pace and always follows trends that the rest of the world had discarded decades earlier. This place is SOMALIA. Most of those who are familiar with world affairs are aware that Somalia today is suffering from the twin menace of piracy and extreme African Islamism. The first was last popular in South East Asia almost fifteen years ago and the second last took place in Algeria also around the same period. A third trend that is extremely popular in Somalia these days is Political Correctness. Though many may dispute this fact and give eloquent examples proving that racism and discrimination are rife in Somalia, the facts on the ground say otherwise. A good example of this is the universal Somali distaste of the name ONLF. The compelling argument put forward by most opponents of this name (not group) is that it is a name of a clan and, therefore, clearly racist. It is why most Somali movements and administrations ditch the clan references and choose to adopt benign and broad names such as Somaliland, Puntland, Makhirland and the like. When xenophobia occurs (as it does in the rest of the world), the belittling and insulting is directed towards these names rather than the inhabitants themselves (just as the French would insult the Americans). This however is not where things end. Somalia is currently experiencing a silent revolution and the signs are that a party similar to the Swedish Democrats, The British National Party or France’s Front National will soon be born. This is because the murmurs heard in an average Somali street are all about immigrants. It is a classic case of immigrants coming to a new country and stealing the jobs and resources of the indigenous population. The complaints can be found in all parts of the country, amongst the rich or poor and across all political groupings. Somali soldiers complain about not being paid their wages in THEIR OWN COUNTRY whilst an AMISSOM soldier receives an overseas allowance on top of his monthly wage. “How and why is this possible?” they ask. “This is our country” they complain. “We even don’t get the chance to use the big guns” they moan. The Somali army generals in their turn complain about having to be the minions of Ugandan captains and colonels. Al Shabab operatives also grumble about the foreign fighters in their ranks. “They get to make all the decisions and are hardly ever involved in combat” say the operatives. “We all fight for the same cause but they get to live and we die” they complain. “They prance around talking in Arabic, Urdu and Pashto and we are supposed to kowtow and accept it, IN OUR OWN COUNTRY” they bitterly declare. Even the children are not immune to this bout of xenophobia that has suddenly gripped the nation. A starving child in down town Garowe points to a young shoe polish boy and says “He’s Ethiopian you know. He is earning money polishing shoes in MY COUNTRY when I and my family are struggling to feed ourselves. Why is he here? It is not fair”. Surely it is not going to be long before the Somali National Party is created. Clearly the day is not far when we see demonstrating Somalis walking around with placards and shouting “Somalia yaa leh?” then answering the obvious question with “Somali ba leh” or “Somali moyaan, kuwa kale ha wada baxaan”.
