cha I Posted August 18, 2003 Be truthfull Western thinking is that the practice of female genital mutilation or cutting is a violation of women human rights. Some of us think the practice is embedded in the culture. Do you think that attempts to abolish FGM based on universl human rights fail to recognise the validity of cultural practices?. Valenteenah. Posted August 18, 2003 No, I don't think attempts to ban female circumcision and infibulation fail to recognise the validity of cultural practices, because as far as I'm concerned, that particular cultural practice doesn't hold any validity or value whatsoever. Many ppl (Somalis, I mean) who were previously ignorant to all the problems and consequences of female circumcision are becoming aware. Insha'Allah, the practice will be eradicated from our society in time...maybe just not in my lifetime.

I agree with you on that BARWAAQO, and from what I have just seen on Channel 4 program named *The day I will never forget* about FGM was the most Horrific thing I've ever had to witnesss. A girl, no older than 8yrs was literally being pined to the ground by 3 woman (including the girls mother) while one performed FGM, you could hear her cry, wallahi it brought tears to my eyes. FGM has no place in our Culture or in our Diin.
Qac Qaac Posted August 18, 2003 shayma thanks for the emotion. barwaaqo couldn't agree with u anymore. cha 1, if the calture comes against islam, it is thrown out. who cares the validity. there is no validity in fgm.
Miriam1 Posted August 19, 2003 It naturally cant be an attempt to invalidate our cultural practises, if the practice itself brings harm to us. And as muslims what is more important a cultural act or the doctrine of our religion? I dont know a part of me would like to believe that the reason it is banned by so many countries and is a voilation of a person's human rights Is that as people we are able to recognize the difference between wrong and right
Reality Check Posted August 19, 2003 I don't know what you trying to say...but cutting off something that one is born with especially by force...should be illegal!! Cultural or no cultural
