General Duke Posted March 22, 2010 Conservatives and Republicans today suffered their most crushing legislative defeat since the 1960s. It’s hard to exaggerate the magnitude of the disaster. Conservatives may cheer themselves that they’ll compensate for today’s expected vote with a big win in the November 2010 elections. [...] No illusions please: This bill will not be repealed. Even if Republicans scored a 1994 style landslide in November, how many votes could we muster to re-open the “doughnut hole” and charge seniors more for prescription drugs? How many votes to re-allow insurers to rescind policies when they discover a pre-existing condition? How many votes to banish 25 year olds from their parents’ insurance coverage? And even if the votes were there – would President Obama sign such a repeal? We followed the most radical voices in the party and the movement, and they led us to abject and irreversible defeat. [...] So today’s defeat for free-market economics and Republican values is a huge win for the conservative entertainment industry. Their listeners and viewers will now be even more enraged, even more frustrated, even more disappointed in everybody except the responsibility-free talkers on television and radio. For them, it’s mission accomplished. For the cause they purport to represent, it’s Waterloo all right: ours.
Pujah. Posted March 23, 2010 WATERLOO By David Frum. Conservatives and Republicans today suffered their most crushing legislative defeat since the 1960s. It’s hard to exaggerate the magnitude of the disaster. Conservatives may cheer themselves that they’ll compensate for today’s expected vote with a big win in the November 2010 elections. But: (1) It’s a good bet that conservatives are over-optimistic about November – by then the economy will have improved and the immediate goodies in the healthcare bill will be reaching key voting blocs. (2) So what? Legislative majorities come and go. This healthcare bill is forever. A win in November is very poor compensation for this debacle now. So far, I think a lot of conservatives will agree with me. Now comes the hard lesson: A huge part of the blame for today’s disaster attaches to conservatives and Republicans ourselves. At the beginning of this process we made a strategic decision: unlike, say, Democrats in 2001 when President Bush proposed his first tax cut, we would make no deal with the administration. No negotiations, no compromise, nothing. We were going for all the marbles. This would be Obama’s Waterloo – just as healthcare was Clinton’s in 1994. Only, the hardliners overlooked a few key facts: Obama was elected with 53% of the vote, not Clinton’s 42%. The liberal block within the Democratic congressional caucus is bigger and stronger than it was in 1993-94. And of course the Democrats also remember their history, and also remember the consequences of their 1994 failure. This time, when we went for all the marbles, we ended with none. Could a deal have been reached? Who knows? But we do know that the gap between this plan and traditional Republican ideas is not very big. The Obama plan has a broad family resemblance to Mitt Romney’s Massachusetts plan. It builds on ideas developed at the Heritage Foundation in the early 1990s that formed the basis for Republican counter-proposals to Clintoncare in 1993-1994. Barack Obama badly wanted Republican votes for his plan. Could we have leveraged his desire to align the plan more closely with conservative views? To finance it without redistributive taxes on productive enterprise – without weighing so heavily on small business – without expanding Medicaid? Too late now. They are all the law. No illusions please: This bill will not be repealed. There were leaders who knew better, who would have liked to deal. But they were trapped. Conservative talkers on Fox and talk radio had whipped the Republican voting base into such a frenzy that deal-making was rendered impossible. How do you negotiate with somebody who wants to murder your grandmother? Or – more exactly – with somebody whom your voters have been persuaded to believe wants to murder their grandmother? I’ve been on a soapbox for months now about the harm that our overheated talk is doing to us. Yes it mobilizes supporters – but by mobilizing them with hysterical accusations and pseudo-information, overheated talk has made it impossible for representatives to represent and elected leaders to lead. The real leaders are on TV and radio, and they have very different imperatives from people in government. Talk radio thrives on confrontation and recrimination. When Rush Limbaugh said that he wanted President Obama to fail, he was intelligently explaining his own interests. What he omitted to say – but what is equally true – is that he also wants Republicans to fail. If Republicans succeed – if they govern successfully in office and negotiate attractive compromises out of office – Rush’s listeners get less angry. And if they are less angry, they listen to the radio less, and hear fewer ads for Sleepnumber beds. So today’s defeat for free-market economics and Republican values is a huge win for the conservative entertainment industry. Their listeners and viewers will now be even more enraged, even more frustrated, even more disappointed in everybody except the responsibility-free talkers on television and radio. For them, it’s mission accomplished. For the cause they purport to represent, it’s Waterloo all right: ours.

RedSea Posted March 24, 2010 I'm proud of Obama and I know all the sane well informed American are. The ill informed ones who rely on fox news/rush Limbaugh propaganda have no idea what this bill means to America. Health cares costs the U.S over 2 trillion dollars a year and 8,000 per person.. This bill will cut costs and lower premiums that people who buy health care have to pay, so they save money. It also elimates money waste spending and closes loop holes and forbids Insurace companies abusive behaviors. It costs over 900B to reform the system, however will save billions in the next decade and trillions within 20 years. More importantly it cuts the deficits which republics use as their center point of opposition to this bill. And finally insures 32 Million Americans. This health reform bill: -Lowers premium and keeps the sky rocketing prices down -Makes insurance companies abusive practices unlawful(such as dropping people because they're sick or nearing death). -Saves billions in 10 years and trillions in the next 20 yrs. -Cuts the deficit. And most importantly insures 32 million out of the 55 million American uninsured right now. The percentage of insured people will go from 85% to 95%, not to mention it would be so easy to get insured now. Finally America giving back to its people in the most important way possible. Quality of life matters. I just hope these ill informed fox news/Limbaugh people really considered the facts. The republics and their pitch fork tooth rattling crowd do not want Obama to succeed specially post failed Republican admirations. Where to Go Obama and Dems to sticking it to the Birthers. The Zack Posted March 24, 2010 This will only effect you if you are not insured already, those that are already insured have nothing to get excited about. Infact It will be mandatory to have an insurance from now on! I should have the freedom to do whatever the heck that I want; we already have one mandatory insurance which is the famous car insurance!!
Naxar Nugaaleed Posted March 24, 2010 What about not being rejected for having a preexisting condition or not losing your coverage when you lose your job Zack. Btw, I knew it was a done deal when I saw the house leadership and the matriarch of the Democratic party march up the hill hand in hand with they gave they used in 1965 in the passage of medicare. I have never been more proud of the Dems then now and might not be for some time to come. A conservative commentator from the NY called this the completion of Noble liberal agenda and thats what I think of it. Its now time to encourage all eligible people to buy into medicare and put another nail in the coffin of HMOs.

Che -Guevara Posted March 24, 2010 ^You are very Un-American.You go back to where you come from camel riding, goat eating rag head Norf-It's really an expansion of existing health-care with few safety nets and cost control that's suppose to lower health premiums to the point that middle class and small businesses would be able to buy insurance without going bankrupt. It is not single payer system or universal health care but by 2014, everybody would be mandated to buy health insurance. Those that fail to do so will face penalty which increases progressively shall people continue to go without health insurance.Businesses that don't provide health insurance to their employees will also be penalized.Small businesses will get tax credit for providing insurance. People will be divided into three groups. Individuals earning over two hundred fifty thousand dollars will have taxes leveled against their insurance-the idea being they can afford the taxes. The very poor and elderly will get their insurance through Medicare and Medicaid. The middle class or those not rich enough to quality for Medicaid and Medicare or poor to buy their own insurance shall be able to buy their health insurance from exchange-essentially pool of insurance companies that will compete for customers.Insurance companies will be regulated so that don't increase insurance fees excessively or the point where it is out of reach for the middle class. The tricky thing is who will pay for the millions of "to be insured" of lot whom will go into Medicaid and will the insurance exchange actually work? And to compound the problem-Medicare and Medicaid are already bankrupting states. The fear is any new mandate will passed on the states.

If you're already insured through private insurance companies then you'd see the price of your premium go up each month. This bill saves people from paying too much and rolls back the price people have to pay and it won't go up, because there will be competition in the market. If one insurance company charges too much, you have the option to leave them and find better alternative which will be made available by this reform. Castro, It improves the overall efficiency of the health care system. This is not complete overhaul, it's just reform as Obama said this is not radical change but just fixing something that was broken. People still have to buy from the insurance companies but at a lower cost to them. It's not going to be impossible anymore to have health insurance card. Yippee! Che, Right on. The administration is saying it will pay for itself through savings made from the reform. check the white house website.
