Somaliland: Heads To The Polls

On Monday, May 31st, the Somaliland voters will head to polling stations across the country to elect a new parliament and local governments.

The election will be contested by the three national parties, UCID, Kulmiye and Waddani, and will be observed by international monitors from across the world, lead by former Sierra Leone president, Ernest Bai Koroma.

The House of Representative elections, which are quite overdue, will see the infusion of new parliamentarians, including, it is projected over 10 new female parliamentarians.

The Somaliland government which is, for the first time, providing the majority of the funds for the elections has called on for the voters and the parties to exercise their franchise in a peaceful and orderly manner.

The Somaliland National Election Commission, (NEC) has sent hundreds of young poll workers, the overwhelming majority of them born after 1991, across the country to facilitate the elections using the most modern biometric scans to deter fraud. Some of these equipment have been donated by Taiwan and other supportive nations.

All three parties, which have been campaigning across the country, albeit a short one, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have been urging their voters to elect the most able and progressive candidates.

The election will be conducted under heavy security with over 10,000 police, military and security officers protecting the voters and the workers at the polling stations.

The Somaliland borders are expected to be sealed in order forestall any interference or terror related activities from it’s belligerent neighbour to the south.

The theme of this year’ selection is “Nabad Ku Coddee” which means Vote in Peace.
