MAXIMUS POWERS Posted January 13, 2009 We constantly complain that the news media in the Western are neither impartial nor neutral. Some like the BBC and Fox News promote the white agenda, interest and superiority. Are Somali news media, especially broadcasters like Universal, Warsan and Raad any different? They too propagate their own interest! This is not helped by the fact that each major Somali tribe owns their news broadcasters and thus promote their own interest and version of events! This is a quote from yesterday that got me thinking: ''Speaking of Universal TV, I understand they have revolutionised Somali TV but their editorial line is neither impartial nor neutral. Every time they talk about Somaliland, it’s somehow cuts off! They don’t have a correspondent in Somaliland, the former Somaliland correspondent Faisal Ali Aw-biindi was arrested and apparently questioned by the SL authorities according to Universal TV after reporting on the Kulyime Conference!, this was a deliberate ploy to suggest there are no press freedoms in the Republic! He was eventually released but the damage was already!'' Are we therefore expected to accept their agenda as being the correct one! There should be regulators on the news media! Since some broadcasters are intent on indoctrinating the masses to believe their version of events as the truth!!
N.O.R.F Posted January 13, 2009 ^Is your beef with Universal? Have you tried to look into their claim that the guy was arrested? Media people are arrested in SL saxib.
Resistance Posted January 13, 2009 Every media portal is sides with one side or the other. But is one only when a news agency claims to be 'neutral' and only reporting 'facts' while their their coverage is still biased , then people have the right to accuse them. All western media outlets claim to be free from Government inteference, so people have a right to voice their anger at them when their coverage does not reflect their claim. MAXIMUS POWERS Posted August 25, 2009 Universal Ramadan coverage has been excellent. Since I posted this, its made a number of improvement especially having a impartial editional line and having more coverage on Somaliland and Puntland equally. Whether this explains their monopoly on Somali New Media is debatable esp since both Raad and Warsan no longer exist.
chubacka Posted August 25, 2009 I think your post frigthened them into action.
MAXIMUS POWERS Posted August 25, 2009 I have to say Universal have made great strides these past years but who makes those pathetic videos that come on the salamaha programme. All the videos are tacky except that new one from Nimco Dareen. My favourite programmes are the socdaalka Kameraada and the social affairs programme where they talk about different issues facing the community. Miskiin-Macruuf-Aqiyaar Posted August 26, 2009 The Universal kanaal I had seen had more Waqooyi coverage than meelaha kale, except Xamar, which the latter because of wars and destruction. Kursiga anchorman waxaaba u fadhiyo C/salaan Hareeri. Sadexda anchorpeople weyba isku wada egyihiin -- Hareeri, C/qaadir Nadaara iyo gabadha kale Xamar kasoo host gareyso. The owners of Universal should take advantage the fact of its popularity, wide reception and for once modernize that channel, which currently looks and sounds more like a haphazardly programmed than a professionally controlled one. Ibtisam Posted August 26, 2009 I like their Somali mini movies/ riwaad. The other day, late nyt they were showing this Somali women and two guys in the whole film, but she was so funny and played them against each other. She hid a guy in the cupboard, under the bed, behind a door and finally in a box which she made the other guy carry telling him it is some stuff left by her grandmother!!! It was so funny! Liilalah! MMA, For many people Mogadishu doesn't equate to Somalia. I am one of those people, who to be honest are sick and tired of Mogadishu being on the headlines both on Universal Tv and other new media channels like AJE and BBC. It shows that people are able to think beyond mogdisho and are able to see 'other'Somalis live in peace and prosperity, whether Puntland comes under this heading remains to be seen. Also it quite ironic how Universal Tv sees Somalis as being more than just Mogadishu but other channels continually portray all of Somalia as one and the same - Mogadishu The anchors are mostly from Somaliland because they have training in Media and speaks standard and proper Somali. only a few of those reporters from xamar can actually muster a few words of standard Somali, sometimes i don't even understand the words they utter. Also most of the universal programmes are aimed at people in the diaspora and the overwheminglu majority of these people are somalilanders.
Juxa Posted August 26, 2009 so Marx you approve universal yaah? i could say alot on the topic but conflict of interest etc
Ibtisam Posted August 26, 2009 ^^LOOOL Marx: Now you are making things up!! at people in the diaspora and the overwheminglu majority of these people are somalilanders. Somalilanders are a minority in Somalia and since 1994 in the diaspora as well. Imagine the amount of people who left the south in 2000 alone to settle in the diaspora. Even in London which at one point was 70% northerners has now shrank as the number of Somalis in London increase significantly. Bad news makes news, it always is the case, so Mogdisho is always going to be in the news if Somalis ever do make it to the news- unless there are somali terrorist! Speaking standard SOMALI is not the same as being a SOMALILANDER. People in much of central Somalia speak the closest to standard Somali.
MAXIMUS POWERS Posted August 26, 2009 lving in the slums of Eastleigh or a reer bari student in hydrabad doesnt mean diaspora. looooooooooooooooooo oooool@central somalia... Are you mad IBZ?
Ibtisam Posted August 26, 2009 Mad? Who me, no not at all. Look at the standard Somali, Burco and Hargisa is close, but not close enough to be called the Standard Somali across the whole of Somali, when you pass Las Canood, I am sure many people will struggle to understand the reer wooqoyi accent, particularly Burcawii. It is Ramdan, don’t provoke people with the above comment and in any case, being a refugee is the same regardless of where you end up. .
