Somalia: The United States Opposes Federal Government Term Extensions

The United States is deeply disappointed by the Federal Government of Somalia’s decision to approve a legislative bill that extends the mandates of the president and parliament by two years.

We have stressed repeatedly that it is vital for the peace, stability, prosperity, and governance of Somalia that the Federal Government and Federal Member States reach a consensus on a way forward for the electoral process. We have also made clear that the United States does not support mandate extensions without broad support from Somalia’s political stakeholders, nor does the United States support parallel or partial electoral processes. Such actions would be deeply divisive, undermine the federalism process and political reforms that have been at the heart of the country’s progress and partnership with the international community, and divert attention away from countering al-Shabaab. They will also further delay holding the promised elections awaited by the Somali people.

Implementation of this bill will pose serious obstacles to dialogue and further undermine peace and security in Somalia. It will compel the United States to reevaluate our bilateral relations with the Federal Government of Somalia, to include diplomatic engagement and assistance, and to consider all available tools, including sanctions and visa restrictions, to respond to efforts to undermine peace and stability.

We call on Somalia’s Federal Government and Federal Member State leaders to return to talks urgently and agree to a way forward to resolve the electoral crisis. We urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, continue dialogue, and avoid further unilateral actions that will inflame tensions and undermine Somalia’s democratic processes and institutions.

It means unless C/rahman Cabdishakur and C/laahi Dani agrees, you can not hold election.

In America today, not one single legislation is passed in congress with the support of the opposition republicans. They couldn't find consensus over Covid bill or anything else, yet they are demanding unanimous consent for Somalia.

Our neighbors Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea and Sudan said nothing. Turkey , the nation helping us most didn't interfere or threaten. Yet, these people think they overrule Somali institutions like the parliament.

What an arrogant bunch these people are.

Kulahaa federal sysyem ka ha la ilaaliyo. bal ka waran haddaan u codenyno oo aanu diidno federalka laftigiisa.

The Somali ambassador to the UN Abuukar Baale explained well about our current federal system.

He said, " within the UN in New York,  I talked to  ambassadors who came from federal states like Canada, India, Nigeria and so on". he said  almost everyone of them  asked me a question before they gave the answers.

They asked me how many languages is spoken in your country, how many ethnic groups live or how many religions you have. He said I told we don't any of the above. They said, you might need different solutions ,, but federal is not one of them to  implement in a county of 15 million people.

If Trump was the president, you would not see that. The liberal is trying a comeback, acting together to continue to dominate the world. But they are weaker than they are pretending to be. Farmaajo has options and he knows it. He needs to weather it next few weeks. I do not have a problem with the 17 Sept agreement but others have to sign as it is. Somali people will still elect Farmaaajo as they did in the past. This is not the first time they have an issue with Farmaajo. They  got rid of him and he managed to back because the Somali people

Even if he is given this extension, do you really believe there will be one man one vote in that time span?

Are you then prepared to support another 2 yrs term extension?

What really matters is what people in the streets of Xamar, Kismayo, Dhuusomareeb, and Garowe want. I assume you live outside Somalia. People forget at the end of the day what's important what Somalis in Somalia want.  The rest of us can argue, but by nightfall, we know our families will sleep comfortably in their beds, and not worry about the next meal.

Yes, and there could be an election only if all sides are SINCERE about it.

It is do-able if all Somalis work with government and register the citizens

It will not work if Federal gov tries to cheat or other states don't work with Federal, federal government must not waste any more time. Election observers and elections experts should come to help technical know-how  and help in theft proof system

It happened in Afghanistan and Iraq , while 100 times worse situations

Time to get rid off 4.5, and hand the power to the people , why are you against this?

So it depends on Somali working together? What is chances of Somalis working together while Farmajo is illegally warming the Villa? No, chance. Way forward is he resigns as Abdullahi Yusuf did and make a way to a non bipartisan person whose sole task is to  lead the country to free and fair elections with in fours years.

By the way even when there is no political crisis it is near impossible to hold free and fair one man one vote elections in two years let alone in the current environment. There are a lot that need to be in place. A big chunk of the country is controlled by Al Shabab and those area must be secured. The constitution need to be reviewed and voted for. Population census need to take place and Constituency boundaries need to be agreed. It is a big ask and will take at least 4 years maximum.
