Why did Soomaali choose Dhigsan?

Dhigsan [Dixon]. That [in]famous residential buildings Soomaalis dominate to this day. The question is, why did Soomaalis move to those buildings en masse in 1991/92?

 

Unsubstantiated rumour goes the buildings are the last tallest residential buildings before the planes land at the Koronto airport, which is a just few driving minutes away from Dixon's buildings.

 

After a much, tedious investigation and a little help from Google Earth, it seems that rumour has at least some relevance.

 

Thanks to Google Earth's satellite system, this is what to those who come to Koronto inside the planes see just before the planes land shortly. They also see it when the planes takes-off.

Maybe the first waves of refugees thought it was impressive and the rest where probably placed there to be with the other somalis.what ever their reasons, those are some ugly buildings would hate to live there.

MMA low income families tend to live in areas such as dixon, or Jane and finch. It all comes down to financial reasons. But, given that it is been 17 years we would expect somalis to educate themselves and compete for better jobs and aim for a better life style. It is sad but it seems it became a trend most somalis I see are either taxi drivers, factory workers, or umm yeh security guards. So, it is like history repeats itself, what kinda of life style can some one who has a low paying job offer?....an apartment in dixon

This was intended as a tongue-in-cheek thread by a bored mind.

 

I don't know where our sister Aaliya got it, but Dhigsan never was a 'low-income' residential apartments. In fact, Dhigsan was considered as a luxury condos in early '90s, until when the caddaan people moved out and Soomaalis and others moved in.

 

It still looks and functions like condos. It is located in safe, highly sought area and is clean.

 

Comparing Dhigsan to Jane and Finch area, which is dominated by public housing with its gangs, was unfortunate.

 

Way to go to Reer Dhigsan, and, no, I don't live there.

huuno a career/job is a just that, whether its driving a cab or being a factory worker like you pointed out, at the end of the day it isnt you who pays his bills or feeds his family so maad garan, so dearest dont be ignorant for the taxi driving could very be a man who carries a degree. The degree i'm going to school for now might not in future be what i use for work, only allah knows what i'll do with it or if i'll find use for it. As for the kind of lifestyle one with such occupation (taxi driver, security guard, factory worker etc) can offer.... ka wardoon

Somali's first moved to Dixon cause it was close to the airport... in case they had to make a quick escape.

But then like all new immigrants to an area they imported other Somlai's that would have settled elsewhere in Toronto....

As long as somalis are recognized as terrorists they shouldn't be that close to the airports. Therefore, they should be moved to a far far glaxy place from any governmental sites for the purpose of the US National Security.
