IL CAPO Posted July 8, 2004 Hong Kong - A Hong Kong restaurant has paid compensation to a customer who developed a food phobia after finding a cockroach in his congee, a news report said on Thursday. Li Sheong-tek claimed he was unable to face eating noodles or congee - a thick soup-like broth popular in Chinese communities - after his experience in the Law Fu Kee Noodle restaurant. Li had ordered a bowl of mixed-meat congee and found a cockroach in it when he tried to spoon some of it into his mouth in March this year. He sued the restaurant for US$6 500, saying he had suffered depression and anxiety as well as a "noodle and congee phobia", the South China Morning Post reported. Legal proceedings were halted on Wednesday after Li agreed to an out of court settlement. Neither party would reveal the amount of compensation the restaurant paid.
