Netanyahu speech - key excerpts

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced Israel is ready to endorse creation of a Palestinian state as long as it is demilitarised and the Palestinians accept that Israel is a Jewish state. Here are key excerpts from his major policy speech delivered on 14 June, 2009

PALESTINIAN STATE

The key condition is that the Palestinians recognise in a clear and public manner that Israel is the state of the Jewish people. The heart of the conflict has always been the Arabs' refusal to accept the existence of the Jewish state.

If we have guarantees on demilitarisation and if the Palestinians recognise Israel as a state of the Jewish people, then we arrive at a solution based on a demilitarised Palestinian state alongside Israel.

Each will have its flag, each will have its anthem. The Palestinian territory will be without arms, will not control airspace, will not be able to have arms.

TALKS

I call on you, our Palestinian neighbours, and to the leadership of the Palestinian Authority - let us begin peace negotiations immediately, without preconditions. Israel is committed to international agreements and expects all the other parties to fulfil their obligations as well.

I appeal, from here this evening, to the leaders of the Arab states and say - Let's meet. Let's talk peace. Let's make peace. I am willing to meet with you any time, any place - in Damascus, in Riyadh, in Beirut.

SETTLEMENTS

We have no intention of building new settlements or of expropriating land for new settlements. But there is a need to allow settlers to lead normal lives, to allow mothers and fathers to raise their children like all families around the world.

REFUGEES

The refugee problem must be solved outside of Israeli borders. Their return goes against the principle of Israel as a Jewish state. I believe that with goodwill, and international investment, this humanitarian problem can be solved once and for all.

TERRITORIAL HANDOVERS BY ISRAEL

Many a worthy person has told us that withdrawal is the key to peace between us and the Palestinians... but the fact is that every withdrawal has been accompanied by rockets and suicide attacks.

That claim purporting that withdrawal will bring peace with the Palestinians, or at least bring it closer, has so far not been borne out in practice.

JERUSALEM

Israel needs defensible borders and Israel's capital, Jerusalem, will remain united.

PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY PRESIDENT ABBAS V HAMAS

They must decide between the way of peace and the way of Hamas. The Palestinian Authority must impose law and order... and overcome Hamas. Israel will not negotiate with terrorists trying to destroy it.

His pathetic "proposals" if they can be referred to as such weren't just a slap in the face for the Palestinians and the International Community they were a clear case of opening up the wounds of the Palestinians and stuffing salt into them.

Everyone is presenting his speech as groundbreaking and as he according to some accepted the premise of a Palestinian state.

HE did NOT, He proposed the creation of a "Palestinian State" that has no control over its airspace or land borders and has no military with which to defend itself against Nuclear armed Israel or well armed Settler Militias that occupy and terrorise the West Bank with the full support Israel.

So to keep it short, he is actually advocating is the creation of Gaza Mark 2 Just another Ghetto for which Israel to keep the Palestinian locked up like animals.

Don't Let him fool you!

^ I think the title is meant to be sarcastic.

he is just doing it to show up obama .. if the us president points out the obvious absurdity of his proposal ... then he gets to say "we took a step forward and it was not reciprocated "

He wants a Palestinian State with no army, no control of its borders, and that endorses the right of the Israel. He wont give up the illegal land they grab. Refugees wont be returning and its world's problem. Jerusalem will remain under the control of Israel...Caqli badanaa, BS.

Net's speech was actually progress. The world now knows what it's demands are and that they wholly unreasonable. The Arabs need to utilise the world media and get them on board then sit down and NEGOTIATE with Israel.

Blanket rejection of Israel's demands will get you nowhere. Compromises will be required from both sides.

^^The negotiation started already, saaxib. The Israelis are worried that Obama may force them to concede more ground than what the old Road Map (or Oslo agreements) required (remember how they agreed to those). Now, whilst bracing themselves for Obama's expected onslaught, they have decided to set the bar too high and treat every concession they make as a massive compromise that should be reciprocated by the Palestinians and America.

Netanyahu is eventually going to sit down and agree a peace deal with the Palestinians. The deal they will agree will put a stop to settlements (and may even destroy some of the legal ones). It will allow for a Palestinian army, state and may even be one based on the Saudi initiative from 2002. However, because of the current position of Israel and the meagre concessions they are offering, this new deal will come across as a break-through in Israeli/Palestinian relations.

Obviously, Obama will be hamstrung by such a deal and will be forced to hail it as the best since Oslo. But when it comes to the final small details such as water, clear borders and Jerusalem, the world will be told that such issues are thorny and would need time to be ironed out properly. In the meantime, Israel will provoke Hamas in some way and the Gaza heroes will retaliate by sending their rockets to northern Israel. Netanyahu, the international man of peace, will assume a victimised posture and apologetically send his army in to level the place. Obama and his advisors will get distracted by the fast moving events and will come down hard on Hamas (and, in extension, Fatah). The new peace accord will become null and void. Everyone will go back to the negotiation table (minus Obama who is unlikely to get elected for a second term).

I might not be with Al Shabab in Somalia but I am fully in support of silly old Hamas in Palestine.

Israel is always out to buy time stalling any sort of progress but the Arabs have also plyed their part. This blame game they seem to enjoy needs to stop.

What else does your crystal ball tell you, saxib?

The 'Arabs' are divided here.

Oo qormaad dhalatay?

Arabs are divided yes but can't they sort themselves out after all these years? The US, EU and Israeli excuse is that they change governments. If anything is to be achieved they need to iron out their differences. They are as much to blame as everyone else in my opinion.

^^ Dee it looks like you want a history lesson ninyo. The reasons for the Arab divisions are well known. But they are united this time. The declarations all Arab governments have been making ever since the Gaza troubles have all been straight forward and to the point. If a fair peace deal is not signed soon there will be a war in 2010/2011 (even Amr Mousa said it).

The real division (and problem) is in Palestine. Until Fatah and Hamas agree there really is nothing much that the rest of the Arab world can do.

^North reminded me of Meaghan McCain on HBO last week, in which she was schooled by Paul Begala of all people. There were going back and forth with your father did this or your father supported that and all of a sudden Begala was tempted to school her so he reminded her of the time Reagan blamed Carter for the previous administration's mess and she came back with " I wasn't born then" and ofcourse he said, I know about the French revolution but I wasnt born then either, lol.....wallaahi she went pink on live television, disgusting and now North is pulling how old are u question u, in other words, you dont read@ng.

Besides, Netanyahu is out of his mind with his outrageous proposal for peace with Palestine.
