Deeq A. Posted February 4, 2021 Somaliland: President Receives UN Delegation The President of the Republic of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, received at the presidency a delegation from the United Nations, led by the UN Secretary Envoy to the Region, Ambassador James Swan. The meeting which took place to discuss areas of mutual interest, including resolving the issue of the UN’s direct engagement with Somaliland, and the recent withdrawal of cooperation by Somaliland as a result of that impasse, appears to have gone well. According to our sources, the two sides discussed their future relationship and the desire of Somaliland to have a UN-Somaliland office, rather than a “UN-Somalia” operation within its borders. The talks also included the upcoming parliamentary and local elections, and the amount of support the UN can provide in facilitating the vote scheduled for the 31st of May, 2021. Sources also indicated that strengthening cooperation on food security, fighting terrorism and piracy in the region were among the other topics discussed. This is the first visit to Somaliland by Ambassador Swan since the Bihi administration suspended work with the United Nation offices in the country at the end of last year. Qarannews.
