Jacaylbaro Posted December 26, 2006 Somaliland doctor performs a unique life-saving medical operation (Berbera, qarannews) A 10 month-old girl, Layla Osman Hagi Guled, from Sanaag region of Somaliland has undergone a unique life-saving operation at Berbera General Hospital, in Somaliland. Layla was suffering from Recto-vaginal Fistula- an abnormal internal connection between the anus and the vagina, which was so wide that it allowed both urine and feces to escape through the urinary system, leading to fecal incontinence. This debilitating condition also made Layla suffer from fatal urinary and vaginal infections. Dr Mohamed Ahmed Arabayte, the head of Sahil Regional Medical Team, has successfully corrected this anomaly. First, he separated the rectum from the urinary system and thereby interposed adjacent tissues. He then used flaps of perineal skin to gain a normal degree of separation of the anus from the vagina, before reconstructing the malformed mucosa. The result is that the internal opening is now closed and that Layla’s urine and feces now come through their normal way. Speaking to the media, Dr. Arabayte said that Layla was born with this condition and that it was the courage of the Berbera medical staff and Layla’s family accompanied with the will of God that made this operation successful and saved Layla’s life. Layla’s parents had been to several hospitals in Somaliland and in the neighbouring countries such as Ethiopia. The doctors in those hospitals told them that they had neither the expertise nor the facilities required to perform such an operational procedure. The recto-vaginal anomalies are often the result of trauma during childbirth in situations where there is inadequate health care service.
