If Abiy wins these war, we will be in trouble. The Amhara will be emboldened.

It is unlikely. He does not have the support of Oromo, and for that matter other nations. The Amhara themselves are blaming him for many troubles in Ethiopia, They are being ethnically cleansed from other regions, and the government has done little to stop that.

Why now? The US elections and the anticipated uncertainty of the results might have emboldened Abiy to take  quick action against the Tigray.
 

Time will tell if he can make quick work out of them or if he just took the lid off Pandora’s box in Ethiopia.
