Miskiin-Macruuf-Aqiyaar Posted May 29, 2006 Salaan... Perhaps, it was a recipe of an event for disaster. The groom -- aged no more than 20, but resembling a baby-faced 16-year-old fella. The bride -- a late teenager. The guests -- both invited and the uninvited, mostly youths in their totally inappropriate ragtag informal dressing, including, according to fellow attendees, several gang-like or wanna-be acting toughie types. Alas, the happy xaflad ended before it started. For what is still incomprehensible to this day -- the aroos took place a month or so ago here in this wonderful city of Koronto -- the toughie wanna-bes broke into two groups, ensuing an unexpected flare-up, finally rampaging the rented space, fighting, punches flying, throwing chairs or any other object they could grab in the very hall where the guests were supposed to dance and the expected singer should have faced. An astonished bridegroom with his equally dumbfounded bride, who only arrived a few moments before, were protectively escorted away from the flying punches and other undesirable objects flying around. Thousands of dollars wasted; ashamed, bewildered official invited guests, including old ladies with all their best Jabbuuti dirac and Dubai dahab in tow, some of them receiving minor injuries, according to one attendee, vowing never to present themselves a mixed Soomaali wedding again -- ever. However, inevitable questions obviously arise. What exactly went wrong? Will the future aroosyo, as ruwaayado organizers do now, have paid police presence and protection? Had really aroos finally lost its innocent appeal? Did it lose its sacredness as well? Will this indeed be the beginning of an end of uninvited guests attending aroos? I truly feel soori for both the aroosada iyo arooska and their families for their ruined aroos. A true sadness and madness of qurbo-bred youths, breaking the last straw of sacredness and respect that our culture demands attending an aroos. Aroos la qash-qashaado miyaa sheekada la keenay? Maf Kees Posted May 29, 2006 At my cousin's wedding, her brother took care of the security at the aroos in the Mercure Hotel by forming a group of guys (incl me) to keep an eye on unknown and suspicious looking people. If you're uninvited its Ok, you're always welcome. But guys who are harassing the girls at the aroos or pushing other guests away when pieces of cake or other food is being offered is unacceptable. The hotel has its own security, but it looks better when the bride's family are taking control ma garatay. That looks good. Uninvited ladies stealing the show were also at risk to be thrown out. I have seen uninvited ppl inviting another uninvited ppl. starnge, isn't it? so imagine the number muliplies each time and you have sitiations like where qiyaastii 55% of the people in the hall are uninvited.
