Dhuusamareeb (PP News Desk) — Three Federal Member States, Banadir Region and the Federal Government of Somalia have agreed an electoral model for 2021 elections in Somalia.

The National Independent Electoral Commision will colloborate with Federal Member States to form inclusive electoral subcommittees consisting of tradional leaders and members of the civil society of each constituency.

Each Federal Member State will have four polling stations. Two new features in the new electoral model is the participation of political parties in elections, and the mandate of Federal Member States to elect Senators of the Upper House.

The agreement comes in the wake of UN Security Council session today in which James Swan, the Special Representative for the Secretary General of the United Nations, described the political deadlock on the electoral model as “a dilemma” for Somali political leaders.

President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed will brief Members of the Parliament on Dhuusamareeb Agreement to ensure it is aligned with the electoral law passed by the Parliament in December.
