Ariadne Posted July 9, 2007 I saw this wicked amazing documentary last night. Unlike the docs I normally see that are very beautiful visaully and have a hopeful message tied into the sadness and impotent anger. This one was hopeless from the get go and just kept getting worse. By the end I was left with a black and grey picture of this young boys life and the feeling that he had a long shot. it was called the Devil's miner and watching felt like watching someone slowly die. It was about silver mining in Bolivia. The star of the movie was a boy by the name of Basillio who was 14 at the time. When we first meet him he has just finished a double shift at the mine (24 hrs) complete with dynamite. His brother who is 12 years old helps him out. And it just keeps getting worse. I was struck most by what the priest said about these children: "They are like Jesus on the cross all over again and we...can't help them all we can do is watch as they sacrifice themselves for us."
