Puntland-Galmudug collaboration pays dividends in Galka’yo

Galka’yo (PPM) —  Galka’yo residents have witnessed another milestone after closer Puntland-Galmudug collaboration began to pay off. Officials from the two federal member states managed to reopen Durdur street in the adminstratively divided capital of Mudug.

A plan to renovate the street in 2015 culminated in clashes between Puntland and Galmudug forces. Clashes in the Garsoor neighbourhood resulted in the death of citizens and maiming of more than twenty people.

In 2015 Puntland State authorities in North Galka’yo ventured to extend the road renovation project to the southern parts of the city without proper consultations with Galmudug authorities.

Senator Abdi Qaybdiid, the former Commander of the Somali Police Force, General Abdiqani Gorod, the former Commander of the Somali National Army, Puntland and Galmudug senior officials were at the ceremony to reopen Durdur street.

Improved relations between Galmudug and Puntland owe a lot to President Ahmed Abdi Kariye’s forward-looking approach to governance

The newly elected President of Galmudug State Ahmed Abdi Kariye has vowed to commit time and resources to the security and development of Galmudug, a federal member state that was once beset by power struggles of stakeholders with opposing agendas and outlooks.

The defeat of Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama’a, one-time powerful, moderate religious paramilitary group, has paved the way for a security review and deployment of highly trained units of Somali special forces in South Galka’yo to counter the threat of Al-shabaab, the extremist outfit still controlling parts of Mudug and Galguduud.
