Garowe (PP News Desk) —  Puntland State President Said A. Deni will pay a visit to Qardho to conduct preliminary assessment on post-flooding relief efforts. President Deni will meet Karkaar regional administration and visit areas affected by April flash floods that caused displacement, loss of life and wealth in Qardho.

President Deni will visit families who complained of neglect by the Karkaar administration despite financial assistance from the Federal Government, and donations from major businesses, Somali regions and the Somali Diaspora. A report on the economic impact of floods estimated the flood damages to have cost Qardho US$ 40 millions.

In April Puntland State Government appointed a Committee tasked with coordinating relief efforts for 2600 families affected by floods. Qardho district administration grapples with several problems including delay in planning decisions about which part of the district where families will be resettled and what assistance they will get  to rebuild lives.

In May President Deni vowed that his administration would ensure funds for Qardho flood victims would be used transparently. “Puntland State Government will not use money from the Fund for flood victims. Expenses to be incurred by government employees while working on the responses to the emergency will come directly from Puntland State coffers” President Deni said. Puntland State has not earmarked a budget for natural disasters.
