Peace Action Posted May 24, 2020 According to astronomical data, the moon was impossible to be see on Friday any where in the world, let alone Somalia there for, the month of Ramadan is to be completed and Eid is Sunday. Any Somali who celebrated Eid on Saturday should fast one day to make up for breaking fast on Saturday.

galbeedi Posted May 24, 2020 Could you explain further? According to new moon calendar year 2020, the new moon will be May 22 . Moon Phases, May 22, 2020 – Jun 13, 2020 New Moon First Quarter Full Moon Third Quarter Moon Phases for Edmonton, May 22, 2020 – Jun 13, 2020 New Moon First Quarter Full Moon Third Quarter May 22 May 29 June 05 11:38 am 9:29 pm 1:12 pm Here in Alberta the new moon time was 11:38 AM Mountain time in May 22. I think the Somali people both in Hargeisa and South had seen, and according our tradition many people have been sworn to have seen the new moon which is a legitimate action to declare Eid and not fast . THis is not Arafo EID where the Hajj determines Eidul Adha. According to tradition every region must break fast according to moon sightseeing. Besides, through modern technologies the new moon could be predicted and seen through telescopes.
Suldaanka Posted May 24, 2020 They saw Venus which was visible to the naked eye on Friday. Ilaahay ha ka aqbalo, aqoon yari Ilaahay uma ciqaabo qofna.

Peace Action Posted May 24, 2020 Gabeedi, Yes as Fiq Council in North America published below, It was impossible to see the moon anywhere in the world at sunset. The new moon was born at 5:40pm before sunset and therefore impossible to see. The Astronomical New Moon is on Friday, May 22, 2020 at 17:40 Universal Time. On that day there is no place on earth where at sunset the elongation is 8 degrees and moon is 5 degrees above the sun. Therefore Shawwal 1441 cannot start the next day. Hence first day of Shawwal is on Sunday, May 24, 2020, insha’Allah. This shows that Somali Ulama lack any understanding of crescent astronomy and unfortunately including those who are in the west who blindly followed Somali Scholars in the Horn of Africa. They should be advised that they declared Eid on fasting day and must advice people to make up that day.
Suldaanka Posted May 24, 2020 1 hour ago, Abdul said: In Islamic calendar the new day begins in the evening. So Sunday evening is actually 2nd day of Shawwal. Saturday's evening was the first day of Shawwal.
galbeedi Posted May 25, 2020 Peace Action, Thanks for the explanation. I guess our Ulema need to expand their horizon on certain sciences. During Ibn Qayim era,in the 13th century, Muslim scholars were well versed in medicine, astronomy and Fiqi in order to answer the questions of the day. Yet, I do remember very well that back home during the winter months the sun used to go down just after 5:30, and the summer time after 6 pm or even 6:30. Suldaanka is saying they might have seen Venus. Before we dismiss what our people had seen , we need to investigate further. If the sun goes 5:35 or 5:45 back home it could make a deference. Also, back in Somalia, we usually have blue skies more than 300 days of the year. As a young man I remember sitting in the hill and looking the horizon just after the sun goes down. Anyway, here we had our Eid today, Sunday flowing the local Muslim community.
Peace Action Posted May 25, 2020 New moon is April 22-23, 2020 | Moon Phases | EarthSky EARTHSKY.ORG New moons generally can't be seen. They cross the sky with the sun during the day. This month's new moon happens on May 22 at 17:40 UTC. Galbeedi the actual time of the birth of the moon is 17:40 UTC which is equivalent to 8:40 PM Mogadishu time. This is the reason why the moon was impossible to see on Friday May 22, 2020.

It will be get much harder from 25th of May, you will need telescope and glare filters to see it then.
maakhiri1 Posted May 25, 2020 Some of the arrogance of Somali Sheikhs, can not even admit this basic mistake, while they lead millions to break fast on clearly Ramadan day. With this arrogance, they will again make a mistake
Peace Action Posted May 25, 2020 Maakhiri1 I heard one Somali scholar based in Mnpls was warned that the sighting of the crescent was wrong astronomically and he kept telling the non-Somali scholar that he talked to people in Somalia and 40 people saw the new moon. These Somali scholars based in the west should investigate for themselves this matter and if they come to the conclusion that the sighting information they received was wrong, they should admit their mistake.
Haatu Posted May 25, 2020 You people do realise that astronomical accuracy is not the condition for Eid right? Which is why the Prophet SCW said "if it is overcast, complete the month as 30" even though the moon might literally be there above the clouds! And mind you these astronomical calculations were available at the time of the Prophet so if that was the criterion he would have advised his followers with it. But he didn't, he made it easy for both the learned and the illiterate when he said fast if you see it and break your fast if you see it, ans if it is overcast complete 30 days. That is the Sunnah and the point of emphasis, not astronomical accuracy. So if we have reliable witnesses saying we saw it, then it becomes a religious obligation to follow their testimony based upon the command of the prophet. If they lied, the sin is on them. If they were simply mistaken then Allah is Ghafuurul Rahiim and we will still be rewarded for following the Sunnah. That is why the Ulama made the decision they did. It was not arrogance nor ignorance, but simply following the sunnah. The arrogant and ignorant ones are us who are clueless about the rulings of the very religion we claim to follow yet have the audacity to claim the scholars are wrong/ignorant without even the slightest clue. Wallahu aclam.
