Garacad port is a great lesson for Somalis every where

It is not Qatar, UAE or China building this port.

It is local business people building a modern port. This is a great achievement by Somali standard. It exactly looked the modern port of Djibouti, especially the Doraleh oil terminal.

Furthermore, unlike Berbera and Boosaaso this town has a moderate mild temperature similar to Mogadishu or Hargeisa. The local business people who are building the port had also proclaimed that Garacad is open for every Somali regardless of their home region. Land permits are halted until urban planing is organized.

Folks, this could be a new model to flow.

Some of us were trying for ten years to build small fishing and minor " Bagaash" port in Lughaya with no avail. Since there are no UAE restrictions, the people of Puntland are building things with freedom.

Just like in the world of computing, it is moving away from fat-Client computer applications to subscription based Cloud Applications. The global economy is moving towards global trade enablers which are at the moment 4 of the biggest

1. Hong Kong's Hutchison Holdings

2. Singapore's PSA International

3. UAE's DP World

4. Netherlands' APM Terminals 

These are the top ports operators in the world. And this is why more and more countries are handing over the operations of their ports to these global trade enablers. 

So for any port to succeed in the 21st century, you have to either have a huge economy behind you. Or you have to be in partnership with these 4 trade enablers. Otherwise you will be on your own and left behind, case in point Asab Port Eritrea or Port Sudan.

This comes back to Berbera Port, it is as much the development of the port itself as it is being connected to the global trade.

With regards to Garacad, it is a good effort. Lets wait to see the final product.

Bosaso is dormant. The whole reason UAE is '"managing" is to keep it undeveloped. They tried that Yemeni ports and now are trying with Sudan.

I heard Bosaso Port is close to being abandoned completely as UAE increases its choke-hold on the port and reduces activity by design. It is paying the big corrupt guys to keep the port inactive and that was part of the whole plan. It is slowly dying. I am not surprised locals in Puntland are looking for a new port. 

I agree Galbeedi. Somali people need to organize and help themselves. Our society became "barojekti-suge".

From what I have heard, it is a catch-22 scenario for Garoowe administration. P&O Ports have asked the administration to relocate the businesses and houses surrounding the port so work can start. By estimation, they say around 100 to 200 homes will need to be bulldozed. This is a huge political firestorm for those in Garowe. 

The costs of relocation will run into the millions which they do not have at the moment. Let alone the political fall out of actually bull dozing those buildings and businesses. 

P&O Ports says their part of the deal will be fulfilled once the administration's part is completed.
