Somalis and useless university degrees

Recommended Posts

I think Philo is the most useless in that list. I agree though, that is as useless(for a Somali) as it gets.

Are you kidding me? The ability to bullshidh pretty much anyone? Trust me you could get way ahead in any field you chose... :D

Yaabka, try not to place to much stock in what other's think can and can't be done. The final call is yours, do what makes you happy.

Personally, I don't think any degree is inherently worthless ['cept culinary arts, what do you do with that, other than put icing on a cake and use fancy knives for slicing?] if you really go after the subject matter, and are creative in how you apply it once you're done.

I agree with Nephthys there is certainly no such thing as Worthless degree. The key thing is pursuing a field that you enjoy. As you are the one who is going to work in that field for the rest of ur life, and if you don't have a passion for it, there is no point wasting your time.

A Somali father sends his son overseas for higher educations, and spends alot of money, and after 4 years, the son says, "Father, I completed my studies", and tells his father that he majors in MUSIC! that is indeed waste of time and money!

^ he could be a Music teacher, or even pursue masters on some other field, sometimes it doesn't matter what you did yr undergrad on as long as u have a good GPA.

of course, from religious perspective it is a waste of time, not to mention that it is haraam.

Since philosophy as a major is getting such a bad rap:

The University of Virginia's Office of Career Planning and Placement reports in "A Comparative Study by Major of Law School Admission Test Performance," that the average LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) score for a philosophy major at that school was approximately 15 points higher than the average for any other major. In addition, the American Medical Association conducted a study in which they found philosophy majors had the third highest acceptance rate into American medical schools. York University investigated philosophy major's performance on the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) and also found philosophy majors performed an average of 5% better than the average. In the verbal portion of the exam, philosophy majors scored higher than all other fields, including English. The quantitative portion of the GRE is historically where humanities majors do poorly, however philosophy majors still performed higher than social science majors with the exception of economics.

Aung San Suu Kyi, Bill Clinton, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bruce Lee were/are philosophy majors.

As we all know, some degrees are much more lucrative than others. I'd say find yourself the best investments. Stay clear of mickey mouse degrees.

I totally agree with Xiin. Unless it is for the love of studying, degree in a liberal arts or social sciences field are pretty much unrewarding financial wise. Before I finished my A' levels, I checked a career book in the library where every career is discussed i.e what the job entails, what qualifications you need, and most importantly, the starting salary.

There are plenty of worthless degrees out there, but people have their own reasons for doing them, and those reasons aren't always about getting a job at the end of it.

How will you help yourself or the economy with an art degree? It's all crappy perspective, get with the real world and get some applicable skills.

And You^^^ give me a few more hrs.

P.s. Why do you assume everyone wants to help the economy??

P.s.s. If you really think about it Art can help the economy, society. It is a form of expression and communication. Many people do not appreciate art because they simple do not get it. Same goes for Music. It can encompass so much history, culture, heritage, capture moods, norms, be a form of protest or promotion. Again it influence so much and reaches so many places.

As for Social sciences, people either do not know what is included in social sciences or you are just ranting for the sake of it. Anyway I'm going to save my ranting for later. Got to dash to my useless MA course
