YoniZ Posted August 31, 2007 As said, it is typical of these morons to treat minorities in such a manner. Horrendous. [/QB] Indians are way far the majority in Dubai comparing to the Locals who barely form 20% of the population. So sxb, look for another terminology rather than the West practiced Minority vs Majority.

Dubai - A controversial British comedian due to perform in Dubai this weekend has had his show cancelled after a complaint was filed against him with local police for alleged offensive comments made about Arabic culture in past shows. Award-winning Sean Meo was scheduled to speak at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in Dubai on Friday as part of the regular monthly The Laughter Factory shows held in the emirate. But the former 'Time Out comedian of the year's appearance was pulled by event organisers here who felt forced to “do the right thing” after being alerted to a complaint regarding several web sites featuring comments made by the comedian in past shows which pertained to the Arabic language, culture and Islam. The complainant said: “A report has been filed with Dubai Police to prevent Meo from entering the country for the event on August 30, due to his offensive comments.” Citing quotes listed as spoken by Meo on a Canadian web site, they added: “Meo makes fun of the Arabic language, culture and Dubai's heritage. He also denigrates the status of the Qu'ran, the Muslim holy book.” The former full-time amateur snooker player has been a stand up comic since 1989. One of the most established names on the comedy circuit and a regular headliner at The Comedy Store in London, he was named best stand-up by Time Out in 1997, has appeared at the Kilkenny, Cork and Montreal Comedy Festivals, starred in four TV adverts and has performed in Dubai in the past. A spokesperson for The Laughter Factory in Dubai told 7DAYS: “We can confirm we have pulled Sean from Friday's show - we felt it was the right thing to do after this was brought to our attention. In ten years of running this event we have never had a complaint before, so when we do we take it very seriously. In Sean's defence, he has no control over what is posted about him online and sometimes, taken out of context or misrepresented, words and sentences can take on different meanings. But that is beside the point. We live in an Islamic country and we must respect that.” Meo's manager told 7DAYS: “Sean meant no offence in any way. It was a joke. The comments have been taken out of context and I am surprised that one person complaining can cause such a massive reaction. I find it very sad but understand why the club felt pressure to cancel.” http://www.7days.ae/showstory.php?id=57360 Khayr, I have experienced both the closed society (Oman) and now the more open society (UAE) in terms of press freedom. Issues are discussed (in both Arabic and English) which cant be bad. Listen here Dubai Eye (English) and Nuur Dubai (Arabic) are the main talk shows. You will hear Kanye West on the others
NGONGE Posted August 31, 2007 ^^^ Yes but the UAE is not Khayr's or Ms DDs idea of an ideal Islamic utopia. I was asking about those types of limits and not the ones imposed by the Dubai police. Ps Jim Davidson permanently resides in the UAE now. Jim Davidson!
Khayr Posted August 31, 2007 Salams, Originally posted by Ms Dhucdhuc & Dheylo: According to Khayr, it is. Unfortunately, preventing people from being aware of the often sophisticated arguments used by non-religious, makes them vulnerable to those arguments when they do eventually encounter them. The same argument can be made for teaching children sex education when they 9yrs old because if they are not made aware of sex and the dangerous of HIV then they may be ill informed about such issues and practice "unprotected sex"....Thats an absurdity-Right? The argument that you, sis made will take you and others down a slippery slope that just gets greaser everytime we try to go down it. What I am talking about in Chomsky's words is Manufactoring Consent where in through such mediums as "Radio" interest groups with financial backing are able to set the "AGENDAS" by selection of topics, by distribution of concerns, by emphasis and framing of issues, by filtering of information, by bounding of debate within certain limits. What that ultimately leads to is the deconstruction of truth and putting it in the hands of those Agenda Setters. Truth becomes monopolized and relativized by these Agenda Setters. i.e. Mel Gibson was the sexiest man alive in the 90's, today-he is more known for his "anti-semitism" then his looks because of the campaign that has been launched against him Murdoch and his likes. Just look around you, 10-20yrs ago people living together outside of marriage was a social taboo and considered as an 'immoral act'. Today, people are nonchalant about it and some, even encourage such a lifestyle and see it as a stepping stone towards marriage. And Yoniz, Dubai is full of expatriates and the muwatanees are the minority but its their "land" and they enforce their "racism" very well on others and the above example is just one of many examples of racism practiced in Dubai and the U.A.E. NGONGE Posted August 31, 2007 ^^^ You're too late: Culturally-sensitive comedy Comedy in the Middle East can be done, but consideration must be given to cultural and religious sensitivities, according to British comedian Jim Davidson. Davidson, director of the Dubai Comedy Festival, says the region's entertainment industry is growing, but corporate support remains critical.
