Centurion Posted November 30, 2007 You're looking at 5 (0r 4 if you already have a degree)years of Medical School, and getting into medical school is one of the hardest obstacles you'll face. Age, is not as big an issue as you might think, the last thing mature students who get into medicine think about is their age. It is not unusual to see 40-something (invariably female) students - with a partner & children. once you graduate- you're set loose on Hospitals, where you simply join the medical workforce, albeit at the bottom of the foodchain. 2 years of foundation(4 month-rotations between different areas of Medicine), followed by specialisation, which can be between 3-8 years, depending on the speciality you wish to pursue, it takes 4-5 after Medical school to become a fully qualified GP, it takes double that if you're going into surgery. So if you want to go into Medicine, thats the route you will be taking.
NinBrown Posted November 30, 2007 Zenobia walaal I am still around. was wonderin the same about you really. FF and Um Zak...this thing about lookin down below is only an issue when you are not in the that feild. Once you start practising as a midwife or doctor its like doing anything. Anyhow who ever is interested in midwifery and medicine labour ward is a great place to work: you get a mixture of science and art, vast amount of happines mixed with moments of great sadness and plenty of babies. Nephissa Posted December 1, 2007 Ummu:GOOD FOR YOU!! I need your motivation...Seriously! Do what you love best abbaayo. Midwifery [anything medical] they're all good imo and is a very demanding field. It isn't your typical Monday through Friday 9-5. It's working midnights, weekends, holidays, being called in and on call. Waxan loo dhididin dheeftisa lama helo, go for it caddeey. I respect anyone that has the time and the patients to deal with it.

Paragon Posted December 1, 2007 Umu Zakaria, I think you should give it a try, the medical field I mean. If you have the necessary will and courage to see it through, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't pursued it as a carier. As for the mid-wifery option, if you can stand doing it as a job for many years to come, then you are the right person for it. Go for it,Umum.
Abdinuur Posted December 1, 2007 Umu Zakaria, You should definitely pursue that and continue furthering your career... ...about the career path that you want to talk, my best advice is speak with people in that field and ask if you can shadow them (watch them work)...this is the best way you can make your own decision and insha Allah it will give a different perspective... Here in SOL, every one can encourage and tell you to go for this or that...which very wonderful, but since you're going to be doing this as a career and you have the passion for it, I would shadow with some local doctor in the field that interests you...and this in return will continue to motivate and inspire you! Shadow few other doctors as well just to see what their daily work is like. You interview them and ask questions…chitchat with the nurses as well as the patients and see what they say about each doctors! I have this huge love walaahi and I am so pleased each and every time I see my people learning...learning is so huge to me...and I dont really know how to describe the feeling I get when I see such people...my people learning and becoming successful...I almost wrote "I love you sooooo much....dont give up"...because of how passionate I am....call me crazy...but if you experience and feel what I am feeling...you'd be crazy too...lol

Medicine, always been my dream but for some reasons, pple keep discouraging me alot. it takes too long, you have a family and a kid to take care of and blah blah blah they say. While they may have a point, i strongly believe nothing beats a determined mind. 2. Midwife. I love kids, I like to help and nothing is more exciting to me than seeing a new little person who i will be like its first human contact! love it, so fullfiling here is my problem, in this country, to be a doctor u need 6 yrs plus some more practical years under supervision before you can practice on your own and be licensed. Midwivery on the hand is not any easier. You have to train as a nurse for 3 years, 2 years of working experiance and 2 years of midwivery training. The journey is the same but end results are very different. what do you think? Salaama Alaykum, if the journey is the same and the results different then I would go with the one that I feel more passionate about. If you love children, and enjoy seeing the miracle of childbirth (a blessing for the Almighty Allah), then I would jump at the chance of midwifery. Sister, I would also look at which career would better help the Ummah as well. That's just my opinion though. May Allah make it easy for you.
