Djibouti hands over Doraleh port to Turkey after kicking out Dubai Ports World

Recommended Posts

It seems Djibouti found the only country that is able to disregard the Court's rulings is Turkey.

The Singaporean company that signed a similar deal not long ago must have backed out due to the legal cloud hanging over the port's management.

In any case, the Turkish company that is awarded is a small fish when you compare to the big boys that manage port operations. It is not even in the top 20 largest port operators.

Excellent move by IOG, weli done

LONG Live Djibouti

Abiy, Afwerki and Farmaajo in that order, the biggest Arab behind kissers and shameful servants are the biggest losers in this.

The only Somali leader who acts with confidence, patience and dignity without panic won the day.

The Arabs can go to "civilize" their "new slaves" in Ethiopia and Eritrea and to some extent in Mugadishu.

This sounds like and smells like a pure desperation on the part of Djibouti and on part of Mr IOG. Why and how so?

Firstly, it's given any Chinese company that touches this "looted property" (which is what this port is in all "legal judgement" from most of the reputed courts systems in the West) will say goodbye to any contract that company can ever hope to have in places like UAE and in the Saudi Kingdom (KSA). Or in the broader Middle-East States, particularly within those Arabian's States who are inclined into UAE-KSA axis.

Secondly, any Chinese company that touch this "disputed property" (at least in legal sense of that word) in-terms of "subsequent ownership" of it will be looking forward to be sued endlessly, by expensive lawyers acting on behalf of the DP World. Particularly in any Western's country in which that Chinese company has business in it. Or it's planning to have one in there in the future.

Thirdly, the political weight of tiny Djibouti and Mr IOG in particularly is nothing when you compare it with UAE, at least in the eyes of the Chinese State. Or in the eyes of Singaporean's State. Which is why none of these states (i.e., PRC and Singapore) will allow any company from their countries to run it or to even get involve in this never ending legal saga and with this particular looted company, lest they bring the "diplomatic displeasure" of the UAE on their heads

Which means why fight UAE on behalf of Mr IOG and tiny Djibouti, will be the first question these two states of PRC and Singapore will be asking themselves, if, Mr IOG were to suggest to these countries to take over this business away from his hands.

Fourthly, Mr IOG and his Djibouti are up to their neck in Chinese's debt to the extend that the State can not pay back. Hence, it's best to "flog" or to "sell" the nation's assets. Or at least use them for a long term contracting out to foreigners in-order for those kind State's assets to bring in investment of the kind that can help the state to pay back some of the Chinese debt, which in turn has been accumulated in recent years.

Finally, all that being the factors at play in here, then that in turn means that Mr IOG needs to find other "foreign entities" who will takeover the likes of Dorraleh Container Terminal and its port (DCT). Provided such "foreign entity" is not one who has much to worry about when it comes to DP World suing them. Or the likes of the UAE bringing pressure onto the State in which the company that takes over the DCT is based on in the jurisdictional sense of that word.

Hence, this Turkish outfit fit in that "requirement" in here nicely, since Turkey and UAE are sworn enemies and most of the Turkish companies do not have no larger stakes in any Western's countries in which they can be sue from there subsequently.

And you will also find the company that took this port in Djibouti has nothing to minimum exposure in the Western's world, in-terms holding a "sue-able commercial assets" there in the West.

This is the background genesis of why Mr IOG had to run to Turkey just to safe this "looted port" from the DP World and its sharp-eyed lawyers, who are watching him rather intently in-terms of who he eventually sells to, or he will "contract" out to it.

Somalilanders need to think hard and deep.

Djibouti relishes for Somaliland to take 20% of Ethiopia's business. You can take this to the bank. I list some of the reasons:

1. Comparing Eritrea and Somaliland Djibouti will always and every time choose Somaliland

2. If Ethiopia can return to the fast development it had for some 15 years, Djibouti will never have the capacity to handle everything. Another road, another railroad, few more dry ports..will be needed. You cannot invest new money before you start to recover the previous investment.

3. Djibouti is almost guaranteed to prevent war from Afar and Kililka regions in Ethiopia and from Somaliland and Puntland. But not from Eritrea. No guarantee who Eritrea will be servant to any day. Eritrea expelled Qatar for no reason other than the Qatari discussing with Ethiopia to guarantee the safety of their soldiers. France, America, British...always did the same. Assurance from Ethiopia to extricate their soldiers in crisis, defend their soldiers, provide land access if emergency situation at seas...etc.

Calm down and never try to assume a zero sum between the two of you.

The DON does not deal this way, never. He is a give and take kind of Nomad, the old fashion way.

THere is no fear here. They will not get back the contract. What they are suing is to get back their investment or lost revenue, In fact,, Djibouti offered them their share of investment.

This is not like assets or private company being nationalized. It is government annulling a contract and willing to deal the loses. DP World is not coming back.

They built empty runways which was intended to use for bombing raids in Yemen and we all know how that war is concluded when UAE abandoned Yemen for fear of Iran.

They got Berbera port just for 5 million dollars a year. THey supposed to built Berbera -Wajaale road but all that is gone.

Shantii million ee 2018 Siilaanyo kooxgiisii ayaa hore kirada u sii qadimatay.

  • Haha - That was funny. You made me laugh! 1

The Truth of the matter is right in the middle between galbeedi and Oodweyne.

It is not as serious and life threatening as Oodweyne thinks and is not something to be ignored as galbeedi thinks.

The case is such that the big powers have no role or say.

Abiy and Afwerki are the only tools of influence here. Abiy by taking away business, which he can't and Afwerki by manufacturing trouble which also can't.

Saudi are fully on Djibouti side. Prince Salman is looking for anyone to be on his side and the DON knew this. Saudi have a base in Djibouti which makes them feel as super power along with world powers, yet they cannot use it for Yemen, which they agreed.

Oodweyne, leave Djibouti alone. They haven't done anything to you saxib.

OO, don't you think that Djibouti should rebuild the business district of the city (crumbling buildings) and make it more attractive for tourism. Turks know how to build towns and they can transform a small portion of Djibouti city into a Swiss town. If I was Gheele, I would focus on that kind of investment to quickly improve the lives of the people (more tourism, more money for the locals without government connection).

Dahireeto,

Good idea, but not good for Dgbouti.
Tourism is a kind of business that can disappear in a single day, but takes decades to build.

Example: Cornavirus has now killed so many economies from Rome to Singapore to Hong Kong in a matter of few days.
When the Turkish downed a Russian aircraft their Tourism suffered in a single month and has taken now years to just restore it. Djibouti has no population for Tourism, Textiles...kind of business.

The best business for Djibouti is Port and Finance related. The plan was to produce all food in Ethiopian side under joint ownership and management. This would prevent people coming to Djibouti and diluting the society. Imagine if 1% of Ethiopians moved to Djibouti, they become majority in Djibouti.

Tourism is good as long as the investment and also the degradation of the locals is tolerable. Any tourist place, the locals are not respected and it would be hard for the Djibouti nomad to accept this culturally.
