It is clear early on that he has definite leadership qualities and is a very special boy. SHORTY: LEAD, (9-12yrs) Male, Somali, K'naan's cousin. He comes to live with K'naan's family in Somalia because his mother (Aunty Asha) passed away. At first he does not speak when he gets to his new home, but later on he breaks his silence after K'naan defends him from Abdirahman and Janune who tease and harass him for not speaking. Shorty is left behind after an innocent but careless act by K'naan that jeopardizes his plane ticket out of Somalia with the rest of the family. MARIAN: LEAD, (35-40yrs) Female, Somali, K'naan's mother. †She is a strong mother who wants a better life for her children. A positive role model through out all of K'naan's life. A memorable moment; K'naan is walking his grandfather down the street and he is being greeted with reverence by the community.
