Somali Week Festival 2010: Saturday 23 to Sunday 31 October

Kayd Somali Arts and Culture, in collaboration with Redsea-online.com and other Somali and Somaliland Communities are proud to present the annual Somali Week Festival 2010 at Oxford House, Derbyshire Street, London, E2 6HG. The festival is part of Black History Month and will run from Saturday the 23rd to Sunday the 31st of October. The festival offers the best of Somali arts and culture, both old and new, presenting a mix of events including poetry, literature, drama, Music and panel discussions.

 

A number of highly esteemed international guests will take part, including poets, writers and a playwright, musicians and other artists. The 2010 festival will provide a great opportunity to meet with Mahamed Ibrahim Warsame ‘Hadraawi’, Amina Abdilahi, Ahmed Saleebaan Bidde, Boon Hirsi and Ahmed Ibrahim Awali

 

We are also delighted to have two remarkable Somali women showcasing their latest fictional works: Yasmeen Maxamuud from the USA, and London’s Nadifa Mohamed. Nadifa will be present to discuss her book, Black Mamba Boy, and Yasmeen will introduce her work Nomad Diaries to the British audiences.

 

We are honoured that this years Somali Week will be opened by the Deputy Mayor of London, Richard Barnes, and will be introduced by no other then Mahamed Ibrahim Warsame “Hadraawi”

 

Somali Week Festival 2010 will showcase visiting artists along with UK and other diaspora Somali Artists and expertise such as

 

Hudaydi, Dararamle Hananteeye, Kaltuun Bacado, Dr Martin Orwen, Jama Musse Jama Khadiija Ceerigaabo, Qaboojiye, Ali Seenyo, Nimco Yasiin, Nimco Degan, Said Ali Shire, Abdalle Osman Shafey, Faynuus Sheekh Daahir, Nuur Daalac, Abdi Bahdoon , Diini Khaliif, Faysal Awcabdi Ambalaash, Abdi Good Abees, Cabdillaahi Cawed Cige, Ikraan Arale, Samira Ali. Saado Isse Isman, Mawliid Adan Aydiid (Qolqol), clowns from Magic For All Occasions, Ismail Aw-Aden, Saynab Dahir, Asha Mahamuud Yuusuf “Asha Luul”, Abdirahman Abees, Rashid Gadhwayne, Said Jama Hussein, Sheikh Mahamoud Sheikh Dalmar, Mohamoud Ibrahim, Quman Jibril, Ibrahim Isse, Mohamed Aden, Bootaan , Rob Inglis, Dr. Anna Lindley, Michael Walls, Mark Bradbury, Dr. Mohamed Rashiid Sheikh Hassan, Dr. Steve Kibble, Maxamed Baashe Xaaji Xasan, Abdifataah Yare, Saynab Dahir, Normode and more

 

We will also show two short documentaries: Jannaalle (The Fortune Men), This documentary, produced by Sahan, aims to explore the history and lives of the early Somali sea farers who came to the UK. The second is a new documentry film discussing youth and citizenship in Somaliland produced by Cabdiraxmaan Yuusuf Arten.

 

The festival promises to be exciting, educational and entertaining. You will be able to participate in book presentation, debates about social issues, comedy, poetry, film screenings, children’s activities and great entertainment, including music and theatre.

SOMALI WEEK FESTIVAL 2010

 

 

Kayd Somali Arts and Culture, in collaboration with Redsea-online and Somali and Somaliland Communities, is proud to present the annual Somali Week Festival at Oxford House, Bethnal Green, East London. The festival is part of Black History Month and will run from Saturday 23rd to Sunday 31st of October. The festival offers the best of Somali arts and culture, both old and new, presenting a mix of events including poetry, literature, drama and panel discussions.

 

We are delighted that this year’s festival will be opened by the the Deputy Mayor of London Richard Barnes. We will present a number of highly esteemed international guests including, poets, playwright and authors to celebrate yet another year of Somali art achievements. Mahamed Ibrahim Warsame ‘Hadraawi’, one of the greatest and most respected Somali poets (known as the Somali Shakespeare) will be leading the way followed by first time attendees, such as, the talented Somali singer and actress Amina Abdilahi, the extremely influential playwright and poet Ahmed Saleebaan Bidde, and the renowned comedian and actor Boon Hirsi, who, despite his recent loss of vision, is still able to perform and make his crowds cheer with joy.

 

Also taking part in this year’s festival is Ahmed Ibrahim Awale, author of ‘Environment in Crises’ and a development worker who has contributed to various areas of Somali health, education and enviromental issues. Alongside Yasmeen Maxamuud, author and community activist based in the US, who will present her book ‘Nomad Diaries’ to British audiences for the very first time.

 

The substantial part of the festival will be in Somali however the following presentations and discussions will be delivered in English for Non-Somali speakers to enjoy

 

 

 

· Monday 25th October:

 

o 6:00-8:00pm - Discussion on Marginalisation and Social Exclusion of the ‘Gabooye’ beginning with a presentation of a new book on this subject, Hiil or In defence of (Hayb-sooco) by Hassan Abdi Madar. Debates will touch on concepts of citizenship and human rights, the tensions between those committed to a conservative adherence to tradition and those pushing for change in Somali society.

 

 

· Monday 25th October:

 

o 8:00-10:00pm – Presentation of ‘Qaylo-dhaan Deegaan/Environment in Crises’ by Ahmed Ibrahim Awale, a collection of essays in Somali and English which focus on the Somali environment, published by Redsea-online/Ponte Invisibile. Following the presentation by the author, there will be a roundtable discussion which will cover issues of Somali environmental concerns and the effects of climate change.

 

 

· Wednesday 27th October:

 

o 6:00-10:00pm - Women’s Literature Night, presenting the works of two remarkable female writers, Yasmeen Maxamuud (U.S.A.), and Nadifa Mohamed (U.K.). Yasmeen will give insights to her novel, ‘Nomad Diaries’ (published by Nomad House Publishing) and Nadifa will discuss her award winning book ‘Black Mamba Boy’ (published by Harper Collins).

 

 

· Thursday 28th October:

 

o 8:00-10:00 – Round-table discussion on “Somaliland What Next?” with : Dr. Anna Lindley (SOAS, Author: The Early Morning Phone Call: Somali Refugees’ Remittances), Michael Walls (UCL), Mark Bradbury (Author: Becoming Somaliland), Dr. Mohamed Rashiid Sheikh Hassan (Candidate for vice president for UCID Party), John Hills and others.
