Born Friday Posted December 14, 2005 Former gang leader Stanley "Tookey" Williams has been executed by lethal injection today, 24 years after he was convicted of killing four people. Tookie Williams has always denied murders and, while in jail, campaigned against gang violence. While watching the news of his excusion with a friend, we got to talking about Anti-death penalty and Pro death-penalty "as you do". She argued that Tookey Williams has paid his dues to society and turned his life around, therefore, he deserved clemency! Tookie HAS denounced gang violence during his 24years in prison and he has won praises for his anti- gang books, earning a Nobel Peace Prize for his teachings. I believe no man/woman should be commited to death if his/her crime is not proven, evidence should be 100% clear, without a shadow of doubt. But does re-socialising criminals mean we should not hold them accountable to their actions? Who believes in death should be evenged by death? And who thinks that the death penalty is an effective deterrent of such crimes accuring again? Or do you think re-socializing criminals is more effective? With the inevitable discrepancies between crimes and punishements, should a child murdered be compared to a drug dealer, a serial killer to a bank robber or a rapist to a war criminal? Would love to know what your thoughts are on this issue.
Rahima Posted December 14, 2005 I believe no man/woman should be commited to death if his/her crime is not proven, evidence should be 100% clear, without a shadow of doubt. Agree completely. I am 100% against the death penalty in a legal system which uses other than the complete, full and just application of the Shariah. I do not believe that any country in the world applies the laws of Allah, as they should be. Cases like this just prove why Islam and the Shariah are so perfect. They may of have just killed an innocent man.
Socod_badne Posted December 14, 2005 I'm against the death penalty. It is vigilante justice of sorts. The wrong man can be excuted. Justice systems are tainted with corruption, incompetency, racism, political and religious Jim Crowism. But above all, it doesn't deter future criminals.
