By the end of this century, 90% of the world's languages could become extinct. That is a huge number. What they have also found is that the knowledge, customs and cultures embedded in these languages will also die with them.So are the valuable info handed down over generations in world of mouth. What is going to replace these lost languages, customs and cultures etc., are the languages and the cutoms of the colonial masters, i.e., European ones.

In view of the above, can't you already see that in our own society the transformation that we have gone through in 15 years. This very site is a very good example that the above conclusion is somewhat right.

I think, it is never too late to turn the tide. Let's reverse the course and go against the wave.

hmm, the only 'lost' language i've heard of so far was this aboriginal language, the only surviving person from that particular tribe who spoke that was an old woman age 89, perhaps dead by now.

But anyway, i wouldn't go as far as to say that 90% of the languages will disappear by the end of THIS century, later yes, but this century is too soon. if and when these languages are lost we will by then have created and adopted a new one.... so we're never left without some form of language we can communicate in ....then again there's always arabic, the language of the quran...i doubt that will disappear.

certain languages are FADING out, true, and an example of that is our own, the somali language, only a handfull of todays young teens are able to speak it, but the language its self isn't lost, its just not present among these few individuals, somali will hardly ever disappear all together despite what the stats say; its survived this long i'm sure it can last a while longer.

is latin lost yet??

yes somali will not disappear , but will change, the somali language we speak today is completely different the one spoken a century a go

first how many languages are there in the world?, i guess thousands, so 90% to disappear at the end of this century is possible.

Salaamz,

there is a lot of truth to this

as the world nears to become ONE BIG CITY,

and from one corner of the world to the other,

the new generations speak a common language, share a common culture and valuessss.

Its a scary world to bring a child in to

where Allah is not being remembered and the people have forgetton themselves.

Fi Amanillah
