Chocolate and Honey Posted October 6, 2009 OMG, the thread is hillarious. I'm confused, I thought Dowry=Sooryo, no? Sooryo is dhaqan; it is the money you give the family/relatives. The Dowry is normally what the groom can afford. I have seen a couple of grands for the family on many occasions. Meher is the gift for the bride and it should be what the two of them agree on. I say take him for all he is worth and set up a payment plan for him . But jokes aside, Somali men dont pay meher because in our dhaqan, women only get paid if/when getting divorce. The sharia is different. My huby said innocently "ask for anything you want honey because I will never divorce you" When I explained to him that he will actually has to pay with or without divorce, he said "Still ask for anything you want but can I pay half now and half later"?
