Graduation of first Somaliland doctors

Recommended Posts

Amoud University will celebrate another landmark of its success story when it witnesses the graduation of the first locally trained medical doctors in Somaliland in June 2007.

In a telephone briefing to Awdalnews Network, Amoud University President Professor Suleiman Ahmed Gulaid, said that the young doctors currently completing six years of schooling would play a key role in Somaliland’s health care system.

“The Medical College is affiliated with the UK’s King’s College which will be preparing and conducting the final examinations,” said Gulaid.

With seven colleges, 1000 students, 126 faculty and staff and the number of graduates reaching 400 by the time of the 6th commencement due to be held in July 2007, Amoud University has come a long way from its inception in 1997 with sixty students, a couple of classes and less than 10 teachers.

“Today the university has almost covered its expenses and we have already paid the salaries of December,” said Gulaid.

He added that the structural expansion of the university included a women’s hostel built by the European Union, currently accommodating 50 people with the possibility of adding a second storey in future to make it accommodate up to 100 students. The EU has also allocated US$ 120,000 for the building of eight new lecture halls.

“In addition to that the EU has donated a 120-kVA generator and 60 computers to the University, while giving postgraduate scholarships to four former graduates to Kenyan universities,” he added.

The University has also opened a Distance Learning and Electronic Center where students will follow online postgraduate courses through the African Virtual University, AVU, of which Amoud is a partner. The AVU has equipped the center with 30 state-of-the-art computers, and it will soon provide satellite dishes and other facilities.

“We are also excited that Amoud has been selected as the East African representative in the AVU Board of Directors after defeating Tanzania for the post,” Professor Gulaid said.

“We have recently added another two faculties, so we now have a total of seven colleges including education, business administration, medicine, agriculture and environment, distance learning and IT, nursing and law and Islamic jurisprudence,” he said, adding that the University continues with its successful teachers’ diploma program the candidates of which come all the way from Puntland.

Established in 1997 as the first University in the breakaway Republic of Somaliland, Amoud had become the forerunner for the country’s institutions of higher learning. In less than a decade another three universities have been found to follow the footsteps of the Amoud. They include Hargeisa University opened in 2000, University of Burao 2004 and the Berbera College for Fisheries and Marine Studies 2005.

^^^You know I was wondering the same thing as well. Somali people in general are very nationalistic people, also if they feel under attacked for religious reasons they seem to stick together. I Know (seen/ heard) that many "somaliland" individuals joined the war, (same going from as far the UK to do so) so for a short time at least Somalis as a whole have found a common enemy to focus on. When and if this common enemy disappears I wonder if it will return to the old ways, or will it deteriorate even worse for the whole region, or maybe just maybe it might get better. I guess we'll just have to wonder for a while :(

as for the post: very impressive indeed

^^^Somalis are no different then any other ppl, remember the iraq invasion, we kept hearing the Arab street, muslim anger tensions were high in the beginning and afterwards the majority of arabs n muslims went with their business, same here I have joined the fadhi ku diri (very fun-I feel important hanging wit big boys) and noticed the “strong” believes in beginning are gone ppl are mostly talk...........occupiers/dictators know this, as long as there is no open massacres (c Bosnia) and they get their daily bread majority of ppl will live on and go with the tide..... there are few true believers in this world who fight and sacrifice for truth/ideology as those only the wadaads of all clans who fought in the battles against the ethios and who fight throughout the world.........the key is to make the idle majority into true believers.........check Palestine not even they are united against the israelis and you are talking about a united somalia ........a great joke (but nothing is impossible! :D )

on the fate- region of somaliland nobody recognizes be TFG or ICU.........but Ethiopia supports both the TFG and SL.........landers are a cult when it comes to SL.... it will be interesting but the south is the focus now...... stay optimistic ppl.......The plan belongs to Allah.

^LOL - Kudos to Khalaf. Huff and Buff is the Somali way.

I don't think anyone will disturb Somaliland for some time. Though - a true national govt in Somalia may make some things more difficult for the current authority.

Khalaf,

you are spitting nonsense boy. There is no way to moveforward as long as your country is under occupation. You are speaking of clan at this time, what is wrong with you?

The somalis that have fought to death are the real somalis and real patriots. We have let them done by having such mind set as yours such as making excuses that everything is going to be okay.Let me tell you something, nothing is going fine until Ethiopia gets their fingers cut off and leaves the somali affairs alone,

so focus on your enemy and stop thinking like a kid for one second, you are expected to make change you know, cuz you are somali right?

That is a very good news indeed.

Its high time, Somaliland needs well trained doctors. Although also facilities but as long as we have human capacity all other things are achievable.
