Somali-Canadian, Hodan Nalayeh, Among Those Killed In Kismanyo Attack

Prominent Somali-Canadian journalist, Hodan Nalayeh and her husband, Farid Jama, were among those killed in a deadly attack on Hotel Madina (formerly Hotel Casaseyeh) in the town of Kismanyo, Somalia.

The attack on the hotel which has been claimed by the militant group Al-Shabaab occurred on Friday whilst several prominent local politicians were holding a meeting in one of the halls.

According to reports, armed gunmen stormed the hotel after a deadly car bomb. Reports of gunfire inside the hotel’s compound continued for some time.

Reports also confirm another fatality of the attack was a prospective candidate for the Jubbaland regional presidency who had just arrived in the town to begin his campaign.

It is expected the number of total fatalities will rise from the seven so far confirmed.

Ms. Nalayeh was born in Las Anod, Somaliland, but raised and educated in Edmonton, Alberta and worked for an online media station called, Integration TV, which was dedicated to the Somali community at home and abroad.
