Dubai: The UAE has lifted the ban on the import of frozen meat from Somalia for three months.

Several rules must be adhered to such as a medical certificate which proves the animals come from a disease-free area, have been quarantined for 30 days before their slaughter and have been tested in a laboratory for Rift Valley fever.

The decree also stipulates that a joint technical committee from the Ministry of Environment and Water and The General Secretariat of Municipalities must visit Somalia to evaluate the health condition of the animals and slaughterhouses after the three month permit.

Dr Mohammad Saeed Al Kindi, Minister of Environment and Water, also issued another decision banning the import of all livestock, their products and byproducts from the eastern and central region of Sudan until further notice.

This decision was based on reports issued by the World Organisation for Animal Health, that cases of Rift Valley fever have been discovered in the eastern and central region of Sudan.
