Somaliland: Journalist Coldon Given 3 Years Sentence By Court

The journalist Abdimalik Muse Coldon has been convicted of three charges pertaining to libel and defamation of character.

The Marodi Jeh regional court has imposed a sentence of three and a half years. The verdict will be appealed.

The lawyers representing journalist Coldon, have condemned the verdict as an affront to the constitution of Somaliland which protects the rights of the individual in regard to freedom of expression, speech and association.

The lawyers for the defendant argued that the Somaliland Public Prosecutors Office and the regional court both, in the charges and verdict, used legal statutes imported from the judiciary of the defunct Somali Republic.
