They taught me today

Recommended Posts

In a science lesson earlier, i had group of somali boys - the subject was about the human body/organs.

i was naming the body parts in somali - when one of the new arrivals asked me - Sir, do you know why they are called those names in somali? i tried blabbering my way out of his quiestion by saying - oh they are just names....we name things to know what they are, if it has no name we know not ...bla bla.

No! Sir, he interjected - the names of the organs you just mentioned have specific and very scientific derived names - he went on: take for example:

-Wadne - waa waddaha dhiiga

-Beer - sida beertu u baxa

-Kelli - mid keli ah u bahantahay

now tell me sir - how somalis knew the functions and properties of these organs to name them so aptly without scientific knowledge?.

it was my turn to interject: get out - you rude little boy, go on stand on the corridor and think about that.

:D
