Somaliland: The Trial Of Waddani Youth Spokesperson Begins in Hargeisa

Hargeisa,(Qaran news)-Under heavy Police presence, the trial of Waddani’s Youth spokesperson, Mohamed Sadik Abdillahi, “Dhamme” began at the Maroodi Jeh Regional Court In Hargeisa.

The accused, Mohamed Sadik “Dhamme”, was arrested on the 1st May, 2019 on charges of “libel and slander against the President of Somaliland and incitement to violence”.

These charges stem from a comment, allegedly, posted on Mohamed Sadik ” Dhamme”‘s Facebook page.

According to the accused’s lawyers, the charges are not based on Somaliland’s constitution and appear to have been imported from the laws of the defunct Somali Republic. It would seem that the accused’s defence is based on the protection offered by the Somaliland constitution with regard to the freedom of speech and expression.

Mohamed Sadik Abdiilaahi, “Dhamme” had spent more than fifty two days in remand awaiting trail, and today’s hearing was for the government to present it’s case, whilst the defence will do the same at a date to be determined.

There are currently at least three separate trails at the Marodi Jeh Regional court featuring cases between individuals and the administration of President Muse Bihi, all pertaining to accusations of libel and slander.
