Maf Kees Posted April 28, 2006 Somaliaonline has been kind of dry lately, so I'm posting a stimulating, useful thread. Say you're a Somali man or woman in the diaspora. 30 years old with the intention to leave for Somalia to invest in a business project. You're armed with an MBA degree, experience as manager in the corporate world and a $1.000.000,- budget (part savings - part loans) for your business. Additional money is needed for the relocation of your family to Dubai to keep them closeby. And also a villa ($30.000,-) with toyota landcruiser (5.000,-) in Somalia itself for your stay while you start and manage the business. Till the house is ready, you're staying in a nice and clean hotel in Somalia. Allright, got the picture with the useless information in the second paragraph? Close your eyes, take a deep breath and picture yourself in this situation. OK, now try to answer the following questions: In what kind of business would you invest in and why? (hotel, trading firm, ICT, media etc.) Where in Somalia would you invest in and why? (Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Bosaso etc.) What will make you stand out from the rest of the local businessmen as a young person from the diaspora? (efficiency, long-term strategy, professionalism etc.) What will your business contribute to the Somali people? (lower prices, better services, filling up a vacuüm etc.) If some nomads feel answering all the questions takes to much time and energy, just the first two questions is fine to. Bal adiga haa iswaalin, waxa aad ka jawaabi kartid ka jawaab. Try to be realistic, honest and serious and consider Somalia's present-day state while you're at it. opportunist Posted April 29, 2006 Say you're a Somali man or woman in the diaspora. 30 years old with the intention to leave for Somalia to invest in a business project. You're armed with an MBA degree, experience as manager in the corporate world and a $1.000.000,- budget (part savings - part loans) for your business. ^^ do U mean US $ 100,000 or 1000,000 million here. If US$100,000, which isnt that much to acquire. then almost if not all us would be heading to somalia/somaliland if the rewards of investing in the homeland was that promising as it sounded should U only need to have $100,000 US in ur savings or whatever, which means Your own savings plus a few loans here and there. Now should one not have any access baggage like kids and a wife, not to mention inlaws that come with thier own baggages, than all should be under a calculated risks, meaning a cautionary tale should be in place for the good of all. So in this Scenario, say one should have a certain degree, and a certain amount totalling around $US 100,000 and feeling uncertain about investing in a hard earned money in somalia/somaliland, but yet far and far away from the million mark, what should one do, if one decides to pulled it away from the mutual funds or shares????? Maf Kees Posted April 29, 2006 ^ War waa 1.000.000 = 1 million belo ku sii qaatee! Nur. That was extraordinary. Feel free to go into details. Everything you listed is needed, possibly profitable and most importantly useful for the country. Your list made me remind of this this company I saw on the Somaliaonline homepage. A collegebuddy of mine was planning to start a consultancy firm in Hargeisa after his studies and I laughed at him like he was crazy. But now I see he wasn't that far off the mark. I would personally invest in a Media Network and call it Muraayadda Television. With things unseen before in Somali media such as: Somali subtitles for Bollywood/Hollywood flix. No more: Alla wuu soo jeestay. Sidey fiirineysey maad uu jeedey? Waa la dharbaaxay. Weey qososhey. Wuu faraxsanyahay! Now Maryoley will know what the Atooros are talking about! Soaps and cartoons in Somali language synchronisation. The women and kids will not like it at first, but they will get used to it. Callers can call live with Somali wadaads to ask questions. You will be amazed by how many Maryoley will call. Talk show with diverse topics that interests Somalis. Talk show host will encourage participants to fight with each other like Jerry Springer. It must be a Somali program of course. Reality show where Somalis with different lifestyles and backgrounds will be followed. Somali people in an interracial marriage or Somalis with phobias. Survival shows where 10 Somalis from the diaspora will be dropped in Somalia in the countryside with a nomad family for 6 month period. The players will be subjected to a hard life and challenges. At the end the nomad family selects the winner. Somali comedy show. Half an hour program where 3 Somali comedians can crack jokes in 10 minutes on the stage. Audience will be given green light to throw their dacas at them if they are not funny. and so much more.
mantra Posted April 30, 2006 here's what Mantra would do.. please bare in mind im not very business oriented.. In what kind of business would you invest in and why? (hotel, trading firm, ICT, media etc.) I'de take my money and invest in property. Yes, there may be a war of sorts going on but people still need shelter... So Mantra would start on a small scale..building houses for people on the lower end of the spectrum.. easier said than done you say.. well heres the plan ..Mantra Housing Combany (MHO) will implement a plan very similar to that of Habitat for Humanity, (for those of you who arent in the know.. http://www.habitat.org/default2.aspx. If your thinking what im thinking that means major bucks from the UN) using the people as a task force to build their own houses is much easier than hiring construction workers...I'll be avoiding major loss and at the same time bringing the people together as a community to help themselves attain a better quality of living..What could be greater than that? Ofcourse that would be the charitable aspect of MHC, since profit is the main aim here I would use my political affiliation to various tribes (imagination at work) and sign a contract to construct new govt buildings and redo damaged ones, obviously cheap labour would be easily attainable.. How would I land this contract you say? I give a few favours here and there..say pay a certain warlord.. marry off my daughter to another.. behead anyone who dare opposes me.. and so forth, nothing to it really.. Where you ask..well im not too familiar with the layout of Somalia..i'll get back to you on that one. Erm that’s all folks! ^^^^^ Load of crap..completely disregard everything you just read…think im better off starring in your soap opera...

Allamagan Posted May 1, 2008 Nice Read all. Peace and stability (low and order) is the key here, without these in place sooner or later you will be wasting your time and money. Yet against all odds we have witnessed many businesses flourished in these circumstances by them taking risks. So am not willing to take risks like these guys, so I agree with Conspiracy and given the situation of lawlessness Somalia finding itself in I dont think I would invest some money in there. So not this time!
