'Strange fruit' is just as creepy as hell. and as much as it was an important song in its time and focused on a specific issue, I don't think it qualifies as a classic that lives on. However, I think black America (especially the youth) confuses two things: 1)The necessity of "knowing where you come from" 2)Using historical events as a crutch to excuse forward progress (But thats another topic entirely) Besides, I personally think, its not an easy song to listen to. The physicality of it all might not be the same but its just as present today, now its gueared towards intellectual linchying or financial and cultural. Africans- or african americans are still facing those issues. As far as Sam Cooke goes the song is also a classic, because the message needs to be heard today as well, thus is lived on throught time.
