Football and Somalis

'Check my bank attount (account)' saying one of them with a lisp. His finger was raised at his fellow quareller with pompousness. 'I can buy them all and still have enough change left for me' he boasted. I came close to these two gentlement engaged in a passionate debate. When I heard 'I can buy them all and still have change left' in the account, I thought, heck maybe this fellow is filthy rich and I learnt my ear to their conversation.

 

But after few minutes of listening I was struck by awe at how these men have personalized football teams so much that you would think its their own. This is a wide-spread phenomenon in the Somali community and an ugly one at onces. You might see Somali youth standing in groups infornt of Somali-owned business, having the most violent quarels that scare the hell out of the poor pensioners passing-by. The biggest culprit is football and how much player so and so gets paid! Whats up with this? What can you make of a youth discussing the amount money a footballer is being paid while he has no income of his own at all. Is this the right way to spend their time?

 

Worst of all is the elderly and middle-aged Somali men who obsessively discuss football everywhere you see them. When they are not doing that, they are talking about tribes... .

 

Have you guys noticed this Somali madness about football? Its not normal at all. Its ubnormal!

Well kids are overly passionate about their teams. There is banter and then there is misplaced passion.

Somalis are the worlds foremost supporters of a game they never excelled in. Even,back in Somalia,they were rabid fans. Despite the less than steller perfomance from there football clubs. Twenty something years later,i still hear about how great the clubs were. This even after Loosing over and over and over again to teams like Gor Mahia, Kampala City Council,El Hilaal,Zamalekh & a host of other African Clubs

 

They never give up,Even after never ever making it to the African cup of nations or any caf game!!!

Speaking of Arsenal, I can go and watch them play (sadly just one game) I really wanted to go last Tues, but kick off was at 7.45pm and I thought I'd go tarawiix instead and wait till another good game comes up. I think I might have to wait till next season. Can't see any exciting games coming up and it is getting cold!

 

P.s. One of my wealthy clients who is a member/ cardholder has offered to give me two tickets as "thank you" Apparently I get free drinks and food and personal driver to take me there, and the seat is above the goal! I’m a happy lady.

 

Paragon I don’t get people who fight over things they clear have no role or say in. I mean it is not like you get some of their money. But you can appreciate certain facts. Like who is the richest, the baddest, the best. I mean there is nothing to argue about, is there?

The problem with some kids in the west, as Paragon touched on, is that they lack focus. They lose all sense of achievement at a young age and just plod along.

 

ps, Shyma, Arsenal made the most money last year but they are not the richest club in England.

In Somalia or Africa in General? I think the all time winningest African Club is Zamalek,Hands Down. Marakech,this Nigerian team,a Ghanian team,Zambian team(leopards) & Gor Mahia won the most titles.

 

These new kids worship football. We used to enjoy the games on tv,follow the players in the newspapers and get on with life..Nowadays,it seems they just eat,live and breath football

Theres no way i would have known,the clubs never ever made it out of the first rounds. The only team i remember personally was watching as a kid a game between Gor Mahia & Marine(Bada),As usual they got hammered but i was a proud support(forget that i was a Gor Supporter),but i still supported my people.

 

Most other teams never really made that far Except maybe Gaadidka(Public Works) & Horsed(Who got beaten 7-0 one time)

I used to like Coast Stars...because cousin of mine used to play for them plus I used to get Njumu from them for FREE...

You must be talking about a long time ago as that was surpassed by Al Ahly, Zamalek's fiercest rivals from Cairo and Egypt.

 

Al Ahly are African club of the century voted by FIFA and no African team can come anywhere near them as they've won more continental cups than any other African club and last year they've won their 100th trophy which also happened to be their Centinaray year...How cool is that?

 

Gormahia only won African cup winners cup and I still remember the rivalary with AfC Leopards..when those two locked horns it used to be war...Jaluo Vs Baluhya and it used to be ugly that where the phrase of "Ukikosa Mpira Usikose Mguu" was first invented...that is how serious that match was ...

You heard it wrong my brother as someone didn't give you the honest version of the story.

 

Brother...WE (Yeah..people from the greatest city on earth...Kismayo) reigned SUPREME in the whole country including your beloved Togdheer as we've won more cups than the rest of the country put together and we've produced best footballers...we still do...you've got to LOVE my hometown of Kismayo

I do indeed stand corrected,Al Ahly is perhaps the winningest team in Africa. They have won many games but i dont think they have many Cup winners cup. They reigned Supreme in the 80s...Another great team was FC Younder & Lagos shooters. Kampala City council played some of the best football while Gor Mahia played nothing but kickball
