Subject: Somaliland & detention of two Canadian women

Sir/Madam,

In a recent article on the detention of two women with Canadian nationality, your newspaper had mentioned that according to the Canadian government ” foreigners are at risk of being kidnapped in Somalia, including Somaliland, and several workers have already being kidnapped for ransom”

First of all, I am glad to hear that both women have been released after serving their sentence. Secondly, Somaliland is a Muslim country and the consumption of alcohol is not permitted due to religious strictures. Thirdly, no foreigner has ever been kidnapped or held for ransom in Somaliland.

Somaliland is not Somalia. It is a peaceful, stable and democratic country. There are many people with Canadian citizenship living and working in Somaliland. In fact, recently, a Canadian couple held a wedding in Hargeisa, the Somaliland capital, in full traditional dress that was the toast of the town. (Photo attached)

Somalilanders are a welcoming and hospitable folks, and as long as one follows the rules and regulations of the country, then one should not have any problems at all.

Sincerely,

Ahmed Kheyre
