Somaliland: From The Ashes, Hargeisa Has Risen Like A Pheonix

Hargeisa, (Qaran news)-Between 1988-1991, the city of Hargeisa, along with Buroa in Somaliland were obliterated by the shelling and bombing of the forces of the Barre regime. Over 90% of Hargeisa, along with a countless thousands of its citizen were massacred by the mercenary pilots hired from Zimbabwe by the Barre regime.

These mercenaries flew from Hargeisa airport turned around and dropped their bombs indiscriminately on the city and its inhabitants. Furthermore, these mercanaries strafed the civilians fleeing the city on foot.

 

Meanwhile, the forces of the Barre regime, under the notorious Colonel Tuke shelled the city with heavy artillery, not bothering to differentiate between civilian areas and SNM strong holds.

When, the cities of Hargeisa and Buroa, were finally liberated in 1991, they resembled a scene from the apocalypse, hardly a building left standing, no roofs, doors, windows, even the copper strips for the street lighting were looted.

 

Today, Hargeisa, and Buroa are both flourishing, much like all the other cities in Somaliland. More has been achieved by both the inhabitants, the local and central governments than in the entire 30 year union with the defunct Somali Republic.

Those who dream of another union, should take a page from history and never forget.
