Deeq A. Posted April 17, 2019 Somaliland: Senior Foreign Minister Adviser In Russia Moscow,(Qaran news)-The former Somaliland Deputy foreign minister, Kaysar Mohamed Abdillahi arrived in Moscow today. The former deputy minister who still works as a consultant to the ministry was received with high level protocol in Russia by members of the Putin administration. It is not clear whether the visit by the former Somaliland deputy foreign minister is a private and personal one, or whether he is being sent as an unofficial envoy by the administration of President Muse Bihi Abdi. However, according to informed sources, the visit has some roots in the desire by the Russian government to acquire a Marine base in and around the port of Zeila in Somaliland. The former Soviet Union was responsible for building one of the longest runway in Africa at Berbera airport during the union between Somaliland and the defunct Somali Democratic Republic, and it is no secret the Russia has a strong desire to have a presence in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Mandeb. With the United States, France, China and Japan currently with bases in Djibouti, the United Arab Emirates in Assab, Eritrea and Turkey in Somalia, Russia would like to join the UAE in establishing a presence in Somaliland.
