Somaliland: Trade Delegation In Malaysia To Discuss Commercial Links

A high level trade delegation led by the Somaliland Minister of Trade and Industry, Hassan Mohamed Sa’ad, which includes the Governor of the Somaliland Central Bank, Ali Ibrahim Jama, the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Liban Yusuf Gahnug and the Chair of the Somaliland Chamber of Commerce, Jamal Aidid Ibrahim, are currently on a working visit to Malaysia to discuss strengthening the trade and commercial links between Somaliland and Malaysia.

The delegation which has met with both Malaysian government officials and members of the business community have been engaged in talks about the exportation of Somaliland livestock to the Malaysian market.

Malaysia is a centre for the Halal meat industry, and a private Malaysian meat processing factory currently operates in Somaliland.

The Somaliland delegation have been on a diplomatic offensive to restore the image of the “Somali” peoples in the region which has suffered from the negative images of piracy, smuggling, terrorism and other malfeasance. The delegation stressed the difference between Somaliland and it’s neighbour in the region. The democratic and business orientated credo of Somaliland had been greatly stressed to the Malaysian officials.

The Governor of the Somaliland Central Bank is also expected to meet with his Malaysian counterparts in the coming days.
