money Posted December 12, 2008 When she ruled Once upon a time, Somalia had a queen; her name was Arraweelo - Caroweelo – the earth maker. She observed that men were good for nothing except to quarrel and make wars, shed blood and destroy the land. Consequently she started a rebellion and overthrew the male king. She launched a campaign to castrate the men to domesticate them and pacify the land. She instituted matriarchy as genealogical segmentation of society. Every Somali clan was named after their mother. Habar- so-and-so and Bah-so-and-so were the most common clan names.Daughters became royalty automatically and sons were relegated to position of servitude. All revered saints were women and there is said to have been two such prominent female priestesses, Abba Mudda and Caddey Barrey Jeelo. Subjects recited prayers and songs to venerate the high priestess. (Refer to Kuunkuun Cadeey Bareey Jeelo). Men under Queen Arraweelo’s reign were obedient and peaceful eunuchs who worked tirelessly to build mud castles and mud containers hence, a manifestation of the queen’s moniker. One particular woman was responsible for keeping men in order. She led the intelligence and security agencies of the queendom. She used to eavesdrop to all the conversations of the men and knew their whereabouts. They called her Dhagdheer or the long-ears and related her to having airborne powers to be everywhere. Men were kept in check. Back then women were the leaders and the land was peaceful and prosperous. The Catastrophe Two men, Queen Arraweelo’s lover, Oday Biiqey (the scared elder) and her grandson Beerlaawe ( the gutless) were spared of the castration practice for two reasons: the queen’s daughter Beerlula ( lilly-liver) begged her mother to spare her only male son from the castration. Odey Biiqey, was spared because he was the queen’s lover and confidant at the time of her rebellion. That womanly empathy for the two men was the beginning of irreversible catastrophe. The spared chaps rebelled and plotted to overthrow the queen. The grandson sneakily killed the queen while she was bathing. The queen just had an intimate night with Odey Biiqey. Odey Biiqey was still in the bed as the unforgiving grandson murdered his grandmother. Soon the wicked two abolished the castration of men. Men became the leaders and women were subjected to genital mutilation and forced to work. The men abolished the matriarchy institution and the family tree was changed from the mother’s lineage to the patriarchic ancestry. The songs and prayers to the womanly saints and mystics became child plays and sing-a-longs. Dhagdeer became a witch and a cannibal who lived in caves. Men reverted to their old ways of fighting. They destroyed all the mud castles and scorched the vegetation and the whole land. A life of non-sedentary nomadic pursued. Up to now, Somalis are said to be unable to recover from that disastrous of men overtake of power and rule. Despite their fall, Somali women still are the backbone of the society and do all the work. They also bear all the brunt of the fighting men initiate. So until another Arraweelo comes along to tame and keep the men in check, Somalia or the land where the Somalis live would not know peace. After note: Just two days. A Somali female doctor won the women of 2008 in Rome for helping the poor and the sick in Somalia. Same day another Somali lady won for the alternative Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo for advocating that women get their share of power.
